Name change for Birmingham International Airport?

That is what was proposed by Mayor Larry Langford earlier today during the City Council meeting. He said that he would be asking the Birmingham Airport Authority to rename the current facility for civil rights icon the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth.

The proposal would change the name from the current, seldom used one – Seibels/Bryan – Birmingham International Airport (for former Birmingham mayor George Siebels and Brother Bryan. (No, we didn’t know either until we did the research ourselves…)

Wild Sweet Orange’s Letterman appearance postponed to Friday

Those of you preparing to TiVo (or stay awake for) tonight’s performance on The Late Show with David Letterman by local band Wild Sweet Orange, you’ve got to wait just a little longer. Word’s come in that the performance will now take place this Friday.

There’s also word that there will be a release party for the band’s new CD We Have Cause to Be Uneasy over at WorkPlay on Saturday, July 26.

We’d be there ourselves but we’ll be doing something else – and we’ll be announcing that tomorrow morning…

Are we Olympics-bound? I’ll share my thoughts if you share yours…

I spent most of the day looking at the public feedback based on Mayor Langford’s announcement on Friday and writing my own commentary on it.

Check it out and then let us know what you think about Larry’s Olympic-sized dreams

What’s IN?

This is a call to arms for Birmingham fans and those who want to show others what this city is all about. About the good things IN Birmingham.

So often we hear people being negative about our town. People who say, ‘there’s nothing to do in this town’ – clearly have not been paying attention or reading Christina‘s posts over on Timetable. But this is our chance to give a voice to the quieter majority who know there are great places to eat, drink, or just hangout in Birmingham.

Our convention and visitors bureau, along with other groups like the chamber of commerce, are collecting nominations for what YOU think are the best spots IN town. Your favorite IN spots. At the end of the nomination process (read: the end of JUNE!) we will make a book, a Zagat-style guide to Birmingham based on your input.

So click here to nominate your favorite spot. You don’t have much time left.

I’ll be hopping on The Terminal every Wednesday to showcase a different IN spot up until the book is out, so stay tuned!
