Travelogue: Cincy’s coming to the dance…

Bearcats logo…but do they really want to? Here are a couple of posts from the Bearcats’ neck of the woods offering you some insight into what some of them are thinking about visiting the city on December 22 to face Southern Miss in the PapaJohns.com Bowl. The Bearcats were formally introduced yesterday as the Big East representative.

The UC Bearcats blog on Cincinnati.com has fans venting about not being picked for a “bigger” bowl game, but it sounds like they’re going to be trying to turn out in force to prove a point. Dan over at Queen City Survey also decided to do his own research on the city and seems destined to be here and see what’s available.

Based on the comments, it sounds like The Magic City is about to be invaded on Christmas weekend by a large contingent from the north’s Queen City. Hopefully they’ll be pleasantly surprised by what they find. And since I know that some of them will be looking at this post, there’s plenty to do in the Magic City besides The Big Guy atop Red Mountain (though he is pretty cool). Check out the list we’ve started over on Timetable to learn about more things to do while you’re in town:

Travelogue: Andrews’ diagnosis used to combat Peterson reports? Maybe…

Those of us in town now just how often Dr. James Andrews is sought out in terms of first and second (hell, even third) opinions about the status of several high profile athletes. For those not familiar with Dr. Andrews, he’s considered one of (if not THE) preeminent orthopedic surgeons in the country; his offices are currently on the campus of St. Vincent’s Hospital at the Alabama Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center on Birmingham’s Southside.

This is the first time that I can remember that he’s been quoted in a release by a major sports franchise to combat published reports.

Travelogue: Birmingham Bombshells hits the road

I got an email earlier this morning about local photographer Angela Karen being featured in the Cincinnati Enquirer. The story focuses on Angela’s first trip outside of metro Birmingham with her Birmingham Bombshells business, which started about the time that Valentine’s Day hit last year.

She’s a graduate of that same art school in Savannah that I went to and is originally from the Magic City. It’s safe to say that some would see her work as serving a need not just for the servicemen overseas, but for the wives and families that have been left behind.

Everyone needs to check out the video that associated with the story, or at least check out Angela’s MySpace profile for the business and her other photographic work.

Travelogue: Seattle seems to like Wild Sweet Orange

Wild Sweet Orange

Kevin Cole of 90.3 FM KEXP in Seattle do at least. The staff normally takes turns choosing the Song of the Day for the University of Washington owned station. Cole took his turn to pick our own Wild Sweet Orange in part because of their scheduled appearance on the station’s CMJ Broadcast next week from New York City. Our readers in New York need to click on that link and sign up to get in for the sessions (especially since it is free).

Click on over to their blog and listen to the mp3 for their single 10 Dead Dogs. You may also want to plan to tune your browsers over to KEXP on October 19 as they perform live. Or head on over to Timetable to watch the video of the Birmingham/Homewood-based band performing the song at a former great live performance venue.

Travelogue: Augusta, GA talks about what may be or have been

Yes, it’s a crazy headline because it involves a crazy situation, as laid out in this post on Musings on Birmingham. It’s most interesting since there has been no official announcement from the company about where it will choose to locate its new plant. It’s even more interesting since the story is out of Augusta and not Athens, the city that is actually in the Solvay Pharmaceuticals sweepstakes with Birmingham.

We’ll just have to wait and see.

Sweet Home Alabama: It’s finally official

Sweet Home AlabamaThe state’s tourism office has decided to finally make the 1974 Lynyrd Skynyrd hit the official 2008 slogan and campaign. This after everyone else seems to have already adopted it unofficially. To your left is the logo for the new campaign, launched last week at a press conference hosted by Governor Riley. Click here to read a story about how a movie and a couple of American Idols made it a natural choice, courtesy of WAFF-TV in Huntsville.

This led us to think of this statewide Magic City Question:

What’s your favorite tourist attraction in the state of Alabama?

Travelogue: T-Town’s loving The Bottletree

Admittedly, the drive from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa is quite short compared to others that may choose to write about The Magic City. But this mention of the site of our launch party, Avondale’s Bottletree Cafe, in The Tuscaloosa News should definitely interest some Alabama students and T-town residents to make the short trek up and explore an up and coming community.
