Your nose will be red on Saturday morning…

Red Nose Run logoSince your nose will be red anyway if you head out this coming Saturday morning (the current forecast is calling for lows near 30°), maybe you should sign up for this year’s Red Nose Run benefiting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama.

The 7th edition of the race will double as the Southern Region RRCA 10 Mile Championship (but don’t worry – you have the option of just doing the 5K route).

We’re thinking the long-sleeve t-shirts and the earwarmers provided to participants should be enough to get folks out for this worthy cause. These tips on how to approach running in the cold should be helpful too. Or you could just sleep in and donate and not go out (but it probably wouldn’t be as much fun).

OK, how about the discount rate for registering via active.com before Friday evening? There’s always being one of the volunteers on race day too…

Hats and Horns 2010 benefits Bell Center, Operation School Bell

Hats and Horns logo. Courtesy of official website. We haven’t written anything about the annual Hat and Horns Societé New Year’s Eve party since late 2007 (and that’s a shame). The group was formed in 2000 and theirs one of the only celebrations that gives all of its proceeds to area non-profits.

This year, The Bell Center and the Assistance League of Birmingham‘s Operation School Bell will benefit from tickets and t-shirts sold for the event’s 10th anniversary.

The tickets are currently $125 per person, with options available to purchase tables with Mother Mercy and Hash Brown providing musical entertainment. We can’t tell if you’ll be able to purchase a shirt and have it mailed to you or not, but they’re available for $15 a piece and can be picked up the night of the event.

United Way launches new online initiative

iamunited.org screenshotThe United Way of Central Alabama has launched a new online initiative inspired by the national organization’s long-running “Live United” campaign.

The new “I am United” website presents a new way for the UWCA to “promote opportunity and engagement among those who want to help” while leveraging Facebook accounts.

Visitors must log in using their Facebook account to fully engage with the site, allowing them to potentially cross-post ways they’re engaging in the community, earn badges to let others know about their level of participation and learn about volunteer opportunities via an events calendar. You’ll also be able to nominate “champions.”

It does not replace the organization’s official website, which currently reminds us that they reached their 2010 goal by raising more than $37.2 million. The organization has also re-branded their YouTube and Twitter profile accordingly.

GiveCamp comes to Birmingham

GiveCamp Birmingham logoGiveCamp Birmingham is coming to the Magic City January 14-16.

It’s an event where area technology professionals from developers to web strategists and everyone in between donate their time and resources to provide solutions for non-profit organizations over the course of a weekend.

It will be the state’s first GiveCamp. The program was founded in 2007 by Chris Koenig (who gives this great overview of the project via video). It’s provided tech benefits to more than than $1 million in services to more than 150 charities in that short period of time. It’ll also be one of at least fifteen events like it taking place that weekend across the country.

Registration is still open if you’re interested in giving your time and talents to this cause.

Birmingham Change Fund has a challenge for you

Birmingham Change Fund logoThe Birmingham Change Fund has five days left to raise $1,200 and it’s seeking your help to get there.

The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has partnered with the six-year old giving circle to help “increase the amount of new philanthropic dollars from the African American community.”

The organization recently saw a change in leadership as long-time chair Lyord Watson was succeeded by Projects Unlimited vice president Ed Fields.

We last featured BCF last April as they celebrated their fifth anniversary by awarding grants to four area nonprofits.

People are encouraged to give between now and December 31, 2010 or until the goal is reached. BCF will match donations up to up to $600 invested in the fund until then. Their new e-newsletter’s got additional information about how to take part in this effort.

BigBham lends a hand to Jimmie Hale Mission this holiday

Jimmie Hale Mission logoBigBham, a Birmingham, AL-based website and e-mail marketing company associated with BirminghamMenus.com, has found a way to spread the holiday spirit. They are asking their more than 15,000 subscribers to their emails to donate to the Jimmie Hale Mission.

The ask started on December 20 and will continue through tomorrow (Thursday) evening. BigBham owner Nate Schmidt has been quoted by news outlets about the project about how it came to be:

“We called the Jimmie Hale Mission and asked if they would let us run a ‘deal in reverse’, instead of getting an amazing deal this week, people can give one.”

The site kicked it off by purchasing 100 meals themselves. So far more than 1,500 meals have been purchased with 100% of all proceeds going to the nonprofit.

You’ve got until Thursday. Don’t forget you can give to Jimmie Hale Mission all year long.

Holiday music fills the airport terminal

Foxxy Fatts & Company. Courtesy of BHMThe wait to check in at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport‘s been a little easier to deal with this week.

It’s definitely not because it’s seeing a drop off in use; it’s actually seen an increase – at least up through October – according to recent reports.

No, this is because those flying out of The Magic City this holiday season are being greeted with the sounds of beautiful music as they enter the terminal. It’s part of the airport’s Twelve Days of Holiday Music series.

Today “The Connection Band” and Clay Chalkville High School Chamber Choir are scheduled to serenade those starting their journeys from BHM. The performances are being announced on the front page of the airport’s website.

It’s a nice way to take off on your holiday adventure, especially considering the upcoming changes for the airport. Today’s The Birmingham News story talks about some of those plans and the recent sale of $151 million to help start those changes in January.
