Red Cross announces emergency appeal

The American Red Cross Alabama and Central Gulf Coast region announced an emergency appeal period on Monday according to The Enterprise Ledger.

The appeal period will be in effect until the region’s blood inventory reaches a safe level.

According to the article, the American Red Cross supplies more than 100 hospitals in the region and is in desperate need of new donors as those that gave during drives held in June will not be eligible to give again until August. Continue reading

Fox 6 one of nine stations put up for sale

News Corporation today announced that WBRC-TV, also known by all of us here in town as Fox 6, was one of nine television stations being put up for sale. There was no reason given for any of the sales.

The company has retained Allen & Company, LLC of New York, NY to advise it with regard to potential transactions. Continue reading

Mayor declares water emergency in Birmingham

Mayor Bernard Kincaid is taking the recent announcement by the Birmingham Water Works raising our drought level quite seriously.

This morning the mayor declared a water emergency, effectively banning all outdoor watering. The order, according to The Birmingham News, allows police to cite those that choose to not heed the declaration, leading to fines and possibly jail time.

The last time this took place was in 2000, the last time the Water Works board declared a Stage 3 drought. Continue reading

Economic impact study now available online

The Cultural Alliance has announced that the economic impact study unveiled at Wednesday’s press conference is now available for viewing on their website.

The Jefferson County report is available for download in PDF format. The full report will be available from the Americans for the Arts website later on in the month. Highlights of the study are included on the report’s page.

The study found that the area’s non-profit arts and culture industry in Jefferson County resulted in $125 million of economic impact for Jefferson County.

Keep an eye out for counterfeit checks

While this may not affect many people, it will affect some in the area. A special alert has been sent out by the people over at the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) stating that counterfeit official checks bearing the First American Bank name are currently in circulation. Water Works formally announces Stage 3

The Birmingham Water Works formally announced Stage 3 drought restrictions this morning during a news conference. The information posted yesterday is accurate; the links have been activated on the BWW site.
