Whether you do or you don’t, today’s the last day that you can register to vote in the upcoming Birmingham mayoral election! It’s also the last day that you can take part in our online mayoral poll.

Click over to Election ’07 to cast your vote in our poll (UPDATED, 9.28.2007, 4:34 p.m., see the preliminary results of our mayoral poll) and to download a voter registration form (or you could just click here).

Our poll closes at 3 p.m. today. We’ll let you know the initial results around 5 p.m. this evening.

FYI: Since the picture was taken, the sign shown is now joined by both Cooper AND Smitherman campaign signs.

Magic City Question: Only 271 days to go…

City Stages Billobard On I-20/59

Apparently there is an effort to begin advertising for City Stages a little early this year. This billboard for the music festival is visible as you’re driving westbound on I-20/59 on the driver’s side. It’s the only one that we’re aware of right now.

Next June will mark the 20th anniversary of the festival (currently scheduled for June 13-15), which of course leads us to our question:

Who’d you like to see perform at City Stages to help celebrate its 20th year?

Random Shots: Go check out the cars at Rickwood

You may even run into an American Idol. That’s the word from out at We Love West End Day at Rickwood Field. You’ve got to get out there today and check out the cars. If you happen to see this in time, you may be able to get to Birmingham’s west side to see former American Idol Ruben Studdard (estimated time of arrival – 2:30 p.m.). His grandmother is a neighborhood officer and an organizer of today’s event. Check out our listing for the event for additional information.

Random Shots: The sale begins

Belk Downtown

A little blurry, this is the scene from the downtown Birmingham Belk this morning as more than 90 people stood in line waiting for the beginning of the “official” grand opening sale today for all area stores. The name change officially occurred on September 2. However, as we reported last month, the Parisian name lives on in metro Detroit.

Random Shots: It’s almost time over at Eastwood

Sign At Eastwood Village

Workers work to finish installing a sign for one of the new businesses opening up on the former site of Eastwood Mall. A quick look around the new shopping center, known as Eastwood Village, lets you know that plans are for the property to become fully operational in the near future. Stores moving into the development include rue 21, Shoe Carnival, Starbucks Coffee, Old Navy and Salsarita’s. Oh yeah, and Wal-Mart.

Fountain Heights Construction

Workers make progress on one of several homes in the Fountain Heights neighborhood where construction began on infill housing last year. The homes are being constructed in the Northern Triangle area of the neighborhood as part of a HOPE VI development. The award-winning revitalization plan for Fountain Heights was the focus of last month’s ONB Breakfast Briefing.
