The train knocked out the cable… seriously

This morning we noticed a bunch of tweets from folks talking about the loss of their Charter services since last (Sunday) night, meaning some pretty upset folks if they were trying to watch Shaq and Kobe reunite during the NBA All Star Game or Kenseth finally win at Daytona.

While we thought it was rather weird timing considering they’d just announced that they’d be filing for bankruptcy protection in the coming weeks, we hoped it was a much simpler reason. Well, according to this report by the Birmingham Business Journal, it was simpler (though a lot more nerve wracking than we thought it was going to be for those folks down in Montevallo).

Say it with (or to) Larry via postcard!

The folks at D2L Graphics have unveiled their latest creation, Larry Langford Fill in the Speech Bubble postcards:

Check out their blog to learn more about where you can get some to send out.

Add a little snow to your life

Considering that we’ve already seen holiday decorations going up around town, why not add a little smiling snowman face to your pantry. At least that way we’ll think that there’s a chance for snow outside.

BirminghamMom shows you how it’s done with this recent entry.

It’s beginning to sound a lot like Christmas

So, you’ve already noticed the holiday music on Magic 96 and its website and the decorations out in stores. New to the “we haven’t even hit Thanksgiving but it’s Christmastime” file is the expansion of The Christmas Carolers into metro Birmingham and six other markets. So if you see some folks looking like they stepped out of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at your holiday party this year, that’s why.

mental_floss book tour hits UAB tomorrow

So if you’re hungry for some new tidbits of knowledge, a homegrown fountain of trivia is hoping you’ll head on over to UAB’s Alys Stephens Center tomorrow evening to get your fix.

The Mental Floss History of the World: An Irreverent Romp through Civilization’s Best Bits book tour stops in Birmingham at the center’s Sirote Theatre starting at 7 p.m. So if you’ve never seen Will Pearson but want to make sure you know who he is, check out the post on the magazine’s blog (which also has dates and locations for those of you that aren’t in town but still want in on the action).

CSI:Birmingham?

On a day when we’re trying to stay sane over here at The Hub, we figured we’d share the latest creation of local blogger Anne Glamore, the woman behind My Tiny Kingdom. You really need to read the back story first, though if you really need to watch the video.

If you’ve ever wanted to see multiple world-recording holding eating champion Takeru Kobayashi in person, then you’ll just have to head to this Saturday’s UAB Blazers football game against Alabama State at Legion Field. He’ll be in town for the  Krystal Square Off World Hamburger Eating Championship qualifier that was originally supposed to take place in Blazer Village next to the Old Gray Lady before the game. Instead, due to security concerns, it’s been moved inside. According to this report on the Krystal Square Off blog, they’ll even be broadcasting the competition on the Jumbotron screens. Thanks to Nathan for the tip.
