We’re thinking about switching all of our “quirky” tagged stories to “interesting” and this one is a prime example of why. New_Nikon_Addict’s photostream on Flickr includes an image of a 1952 Jet magazine article talking about the “burying” of sin here in Birmingham. Sound familiar? It should since it was just used again recently in Detroit, MI by the NAACP.

It’s National Hot Dog Day!
It’s actually the 50th anniversary of National Hot Dog Day, introduced to us by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in 1957. According to their official website (yes, we’re serious), more than 2.3 billion franks will be eaten this July, which is actually National Hot Dog Month.
We here in Birmingham are pretty picky about our hot dogs, whether it’s the "special sauce" or the Grapico or Coke that goes along with our dogs.
Where’s your favorite place to go grab a hot dog (or 3) and why?

There’s a chance, by 12 p.m. local time, that we’ll see a new hot dog eating champion. There is a Birmingham representative at the 2007 Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest today.
Chris "The Phenom" Simpson is representing the Magic City in Coney Island this morning. Simpson finished 6th in last year’s competition.
As we write this, he is currently at 10, putting him in 3rd place. We’ll let you know how he does. Continue reading
AAFL one step closer to reality in Birmingham
The All American Football League (AAFL) is the latest attempt to create a 2nd professional football league here in the United States. Ironically their first tryouts, being held in Orlando through today, are taking place shortly after the dissolving of the NFL’s European league, providing an additional pool of athletes as they prepare for a spring 2008 opening. They are hoping that collegiate ties, including have a former NCAA President as it’s commissioner, will allow it to succeed where others have failed.
Legion Field is said to be one of the locations that has been secured for games, meaning that Birmingham is in line to get a team. The Capstone Report (music loop) is taking the wait and see approach about the success of the new venture, a position that seems to be shared by potential host universities, including Purdue as IndyStar.com reports.

T-minus 90 minutes until iPhone debuts in B’ham
Here’s the scene at The Summit. While Birmingham is definitely not as crazy as New York is about the whole deal, there’s still a significant number of people camped outside of the currently-closed Apple Store.
The store is scheduled to reopen at 6 p.m. local time to begin selling the iPhone to the waiting public. In case you don’t want to deal with the traffic or the lines, the latest Apple gadget is available at area AT&T stores.
Good luck!

My Birmingham: Your thoughts on Siegelman & Scrushy sentences
We’ve already updated our poll question on the front page to see what our readers think about Siegelman’s and Scrushy’s sentences, but we thought we’d go that extra mile today and ask you to articulate your points. Go on over to My Birmingham and let us know what you think about last night’s decisions.
But of course we want to have you vote on this as well. Keep an eye out on My Birmingham for a piece on Sunday about our recently closed poll about the 2007 mayoral race.
