Free Pancake Day, Area IHOP locations

Participating IHOP restaurants will give you a free short stack of pancakes to celebrate National Pancake Day. In exchange, you’re asked to donate to your local children’s hospital through Children’s Miracle Network.

You can’t get it to go (dine-in only) and there’s a limit of one order per customer. It’s been quite successful – they raised $625,000 last year and hope to raise close to $750,000 this year!

You want to help out the Library of Congress?

Yes, you read that headline right… THE Library of Congress (with a little help from Flickr that is). The partnership, called The Commons, began in June 2007 according to the project page, providing an opportunity for us, the public, to join in on the continuing conversation of history. It is a pilot program, one that will hopefully encourage other cultural institutions to share some of their archives with the world of web users.

Whether it’s a photograph from Birmingham, AL or Birmingham, MI, our help on this project is unmeasurable, so take a moment and browse through a few of these glimpses into our country’s past. It will do a great deal to help its future.

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute formally received its 2007 National Medal for Museum and Library Service that was first announced in mid-November. On hand to receive the award in Washington, DC from First Lady Laura Bush and IMLS director Anne Radice were BCRI CEO Lawrence Pijeaux, Jr. and Birmingham City Schools family involvement coordinator Shirina Davenport (to Pijeaux’s left as you are looking at the image). Head on over to IMLS’ site to view the official general release and the one recognizing the Institute’s achievement.

So now you can watch that Patriots game on Saturday…

For those football fans in the area that want to see if the New England Patriots can make NFL history this Saturday, well now you can. The game, which was originally only going to be broadcast on the NFL Network, will now also be simulcast on both CBS and NBC as the result of an agreement reached earlier today. The Patriots will kickoff against the New York Giants beginning at 7 p.m.

Depending on what your tastes in television are, you may think that we’re getting an upgrade: NBC was scheduled to air “Dateline NBC” and a repeat of “Law & Order: SVU” while CBS was going to broadcast the George Clooney film, “Good Night, and Good Luck” and “48 Hours: Mysteries.”

In a follow-up to a story that we first posted about in June, News Corporation announced on Saturday that eight of those stations, including Birmingham’s own WBRC-TV, will be sold to Oak Hill Capital Partners, a private equity company with offices in Menlo Park, CA, New York, NY and Stamford, CT. The reported amount paid for the eight stations is $1.1 billion – and its completion is of course subject to regulatory approval.

With the nation prepared to take a moment to remember those that perished on the day of infamy in 1941, those in Birmingham took a moment to remember those that suffered on 9/11. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum‘s traveling exhibit stopped in The Magic City on December 6. Here bagpipers play at the end of a mid-morning ceremony.

Bowl games a plenty

As locals prepare to cheer on the Crimson Tide or the Tigers to bowl victories, some of us who are transplants (or those that are just a little crazy for American football) may want to get a handle on all the other games that are about to be played, whether for bragging rights or just for the fun of it all).

We figured we’d give you some help keeping track of all of these games by posting this list over on Timetable.

Plus, now you’ll actually know when all of the games start (we listed the times in Central). Check it out!
