State of Emergency: a Vote 2 Live rally, City Council Chambers

Next week Monday, our city’s young adults and youth will have the opportunity to make sure that their voices are heard during this year’s mayoral campaign during the Vote 2 Live rally taking place in Birmingham City Council chambers (City Hall, 3rd floor).

The event is an initiative of Innovative Approach Foundation in cooperation with other community organizations and it is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and last for about an hour. According to information provided by the event’s organizers, the candidates have been invited to attend so that the city’s young adults would be able to ask them questions the night before the city decides who they want their next leader to be. There will also be giveaways and spoken word performances as part of the festivities.

If you have any questions or concerns, contact Sylvia Bennett-Stone @ 205.283.6980 or DeJuana Thompson @ 205.706.7060.

New online crime map available

Members of the group Victims of Birmingham Crime have developed an online map where people can keep track of recent crimes in the city of Birmingham.

A look at the map shows that they are going back and referencing every crime that has taken place this calendar year within the city limits. While there is a contact link on the map, it may be best to contact the group through their MySpace profile. Or to contact the Birmingham Batman with the following information so that he may add it to the map:

Date
Time
Address, intersection or street
Description of the incident

From the Stationmaster: What type of mayor do you want?

Just a couple of things for this Wednesday afternoon:

A reminder that you can win tickets to the Junior Patrons Pompeii Preview Gala courtesy of your hub for information! For those that tried earlier today and got frustrated; yes, we fixed the problem on our end that was making it a little difficult to register. It’s all better now.

Check out this editorial asking us to think about the characteristics our next mayor should have instead of the issues over on my Birmingham. Some interesting food for thought as we wind down the general election portion of this year’s mayoral race. Especially as the issues are making it tougher to evaluate the individuals as fairly as we’d like to.

Enjoy the ride!

Halloween ’07: Let the listings begin

We figured since people are always looking for somewhere to enjoy themselves during this most ghoulish time of the year that we’d try our best to oblige. We’ve started a collection of Halloween-related events and activities for folks over on Timetable.

First up, a list of haunted houses, warehouses and such in the immediate Birmingham metropolitan area. We’re not claiming that this list in complete by any stretch of the imagination. Click on over, check it out and let us know what to add to it using the email listed on the page.

Election ’07: You’ve got no excuse

Not to vote that is. For those that are thinking that since they will not be in town on Election Day that they do not need to worry about having their voices heard, that’s why there’s absentee balloting!

If you are registered and you’re finding it’s going to be iffy whether or not you’re going to be able to get to your voting location on October 9 due to travel, you can cast your vote on the 3rd floor of Birmingham City Hall, between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. in Conference Room A. You will be able to cast absentee ballots until 5 p.m. this Thursday, October 4.

If you want to hear what some of the candidates have to say about issues and see what else is planned during the last week of the general election for mayor, visit our Election ’07 site.

NBC 13 first local news to broadcast in HD

According to a news story/press release published on MSNBC, the Birmingham, AL NBC affiliate will be the first station in the state of Alabama to broadcast their local news coverage in high definition. The transmissions will begin on October 17 with their 10 p.m. broadcast.

All of the major stations carry their local news on their HD signals, but NBC 13 would be the first to actually take advantage of the technology. The changes will coincide with a new set designed to take advantage of the new technology.

While we’re at it we appreciate MSNBC listing us under their local blogs heading on their redesigned local page for Birmingham.

Election ’07: Final results are up

While we could just keep on mining these numbers for any little thing that they could tell us, we figured we’d stop while we’re ahead and just provide the basic facts from our mayoral poll.

The submission page has been transformed into a results page, providing it in table format. We hope you’re as intrigued by the results as we are. Links to them are listed below:
