“We Love West End” block party, Historic Rickwood Field

The West End Merchants Association, West End Community and Main Street Birmingham, a nonprofit group working to improve our city, are throwing their annual community block party/car show at historic Rickwood Field Saturday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The field is located at 1137 2nd Ave. West. Besides the cars on display, there will be live music, free hot dogs and drinks, rides for the kids, a basketball shoot out and door prizes.

Cost: Free

The Week in Review starts tomorrow

The staff is about to volunteer their time down at Artwalk this evening, both for the festival as well as serving as a street team both tonight and tomorrow. There will be a recap of the days events beginning at 10 p.m. (yeah, we know it sounds like the big boys on TV). We’ll also be posting stories that didn’t make it on the site this week tomorrow, even though we know that most of you will be watching football (we’ll feel better catching up).

Just a reminder that if you happen to see a couple of folks coming towards you with a “It’s Nice to Have You in Birmingham” shirt on, it’s probably a member of the street team and your chance to win one of those very same t-shirts before we start selling them on the site next week. Keep your eyes open.

Magic City Question: What’s your favorite locally owned spot?

There have been several national chains that have recently announced plans to expand or reopen in the Birmingham metropolitan area. That’s a good thing as it shows how people outside the region view the economic climate in the area. But we’re a local website, so what we’d like to know is, what’s your favorite locally owned business and why?

Schlotzsky’s Originals all over town

Schlotzsky’s LogoThe list of national and regional food chains expanding into the region keeps on growing. Schlotzsky’s has announced that they will be adding eight more locations to the Birmingham market by 2012. The Birmingham Business Journal has more information about the announcement from the Austin, TX-based company. We started a list of national retail chains that people may want to see come to town in the comments section of the Einstein Bros. post. Add some more if you want to, but we’re looking forward to seeing your answers to this week’s Magic City Question…

(NOTE: We’d come up with a cool name for this string of posts, but we haven’t thought of one for it yet. If you do, go ahead and send it in.)

And they’re STILL undefeated

That’s right, the BSC Panthers won their first football game since 1939 against Mississippi College 41-13 at Legion Field on Thursday evening.

BSC Football: Undefeated since 1939

Bsc Football LogoOf course the main reason that they can say that is because they haven’t played a collegiate athletic association-sanctioned game since then. The streak is in jeopardy this evening when the Birmingham Southern College Panthers begin their 2007 season at 6 p.m. against Mississippi College at historic Legion Field.

There was a great deal of debate when the move from NCAA Division I to Division III athletics was announced; what went unnoticed was the conversation that occurred nationally after that decision was made. One of the more interesting commentaries came from respected sports writer and NPR contributor Frank Deford. Click here to hear Mr. Deford’s commentary filed this winter about some of the unexpected results of the move.
