Today’s editorial: warm and fuzzy but for how long…

The image at the Birmingham Museum of Art on Saturday was heartwarming and gave hope for the future of the facility – it’s the announced plans for a proposed expansion that made me think about just what it all meant over on my Birmingham

Election ’08: Obama’s Birmingham office opens Wednesday

There’s already a buzz about it around town – Barack Obama‘s Birmingham field office will be opening on Wednesday with an event at 6:30 p.m. The state’s become a battleground state in the ’08 race and the candidates are starting to ramp up their efforts prior to the primary in February. Obama’s folks are inviting folks to come out and celebrate while listening in/participating on a conference call with his wife Michelle.

The headquarters is located at 1813 4th Ave North on the 2nd floor. It’s being hosted by the campaign’s statewide field director (Sava Berhane) Congressman Artur Davis, Representative Merika Coleman and Senator Quentin Ross. Based on the buzz and email/social networking traffic being seen, it’s probably going to be a big one.

One down, one to go for December 22 bowl game

Legion Field‘s days may appear to be numbered, but The Old Gray Lady’s still got some life left in her yet. Among the games scheduled to be played in the next few weeks at the historic field is the 2nd annual PapaJohns.com Bowl on December 22nd.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles logoOver the weekend one of the opponents in the game was determined. The University of Southern Mississippi was invited and accepted the invitation to the game. The Golden Eagles will play a team from the Big East conference; the game will be televised on ESPN2 beginning at 12 p.m. local time.

Memphis fans breathed a sigh of relief as they while would have enjoyed an invitation, it would have been difficult for fans to decide between the game in Birmingham and a basketball match-up against Georgetown University on the same day (starting at 11 a.m.) as mentioned in this post onThe Memphis Edge.

We should be finding out Southern Miss’ opponent relatively soon; in the meantime tickets are already available through UAB’s website.

U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby is going to be a busy individual today as he helps celebrate two of our state’s newest projects to provide top-level environmental educational facilities. He’ll be present at 10 a.m. when the Alabama 4-H unveils its new $5 million, 17,500 square-feet Environmental Science Education Center nestled along Lay Lake near Columbiana. He will then make his way to Birmingham this afternoon for a 2 p.m. groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction on Ruffner Mountain‘s new visitors center.

This morning’s 4-H dedication ceremony will also feature the release of several rehabilitated red-tail hawks by the Southeast Raptor Center, part of Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, a symbol of 4-H’s commitment to the environment according to a statement included in their press release. A Shockwave slide show presentation is available on the organization’s website.

The 4-H center has received LEED Gold certification while Ruffner is seeking LEED certification upon completion of the project.
