ELection 2007: The first mayoral forum is announced

During this morning’s city council meeting, The Parkway East District Business Association (PEDBA) [directions] handed out copies of a letter announcing their Eastern Area Mayoral Candidates Forum scheduled for next week Thursday, July 26. This would be the first such event organized during this mayoral election cycle.

The forum will be held at Parkway Christian Fellowship Church from 7 – 8:30 p.m. The letter states that the questions will be focused on specific needs of the Eastern area, including youth development, security, economic development and business.

A busy week for one of our American Idols

Hicks Heart and Soul coverTaylor Hicks is on a different sort of tour this week as he hits the network show circuit promoting his new book, Heart Full of Soul: An Inspirational Memoir About Finding Your Voice and Finding Your Way.

This morning the season 5 winnner of American Idol is appearing on Good Morning America during the 8 – 9 a.m. hour. He will appear on ABC’s The View tomorrow, July 18.

The 272 page book was released on July 10.

The return of the Magic City MySpace Directory

It took a lot longer to reconstruct than we first thought, but we can now finally say that the Magic City MySpace Directory is back up and running. It’s the first such directory for an individual city or metropolitan area and we know that we don’t have everybody.

Abortion rights demonstrations to continue all week

Those that believed that the demonstrations over the weekend were all were mistaken.

Birmingham Weekly’s Mixed Media has the activities organized by the Greater Birmingham Chapter of the National Organization of Women (NOW) for the week.

Their events provide an alternative to ones organized for the week by Operation Save America’s (formerly Operation Rescue) and listed on this site set up specifically for the week.

Babywearing growing in metro Birmingham

The amount of new parents that are turning to "babywearing" is incredible. Our local resident experts in the field, the Magic City Slingers, have reason to enjoy this Friday the 13th as their new business cards have arrived.

Birmingham’s chapter (Alabama’s first incidentally) of Nine In, Nine Out, the national babywearing organization, says that it purpose is to bring together experienced “babywearers” and people who would like help choosing and using a baby carrier. They call it a “fellowship of the sling.” You may want to check out the nonprofit’s site to learn more about who founded the group and how it is helping newborns and parents.
