Unmask Your Potential, Icon Restaurant

Broadway Across America and the Central Alabama Women’s Business Center (CAWBC) host this event at Icon Restaurant beginning at 5:30 p.m. It not only celebrates the return of The Phantom of the Opera to the Magic City, but it also provides an opportunity for women business professionals and owners to to get out of the office and meet a few people that will contribute to the quality of their business network. There will also be opportunities to win free tickets and other door prizes as well as complimentary food.

1917:

Kelly Ingram became the first enlisted serviceman to die in combat during World War I. A monument to Ingram stands in the park that bears his name in Birmingham’s city center, across from the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and Sixteenth Street Baptist Church.

New blog focuses on Intown

The Intown site capture

Yes, that’s what I said. The author of The InTown Green/Urban Upscale Minute wants you to move and pay attention to some of the historic neighborhoods in Birmingham. It also sounds like we may have another suggestion for what to call the Magic City’s city center.

It’s still early, but it looks as if the author’s focus is going to be the northern areas of the city. Time will tell though as it is brand new.

Two chances to see “It’s A Thick Book” tonight

Tonight folks have two opportunities to learn more about “the longest, biggest, heaviest constitution in the world” at screenings of “It’s a Thick Book,” an entertaining and informative documentary on the subject.

The Hoover High School Auditorium will show the documentary at 6:30 p.m. while Mountain Brook High School‘s Fine Arts Center will present it at 7:00 p.m.

It’s less than hour long and is a good introduction to the issue of reforming the state’s constitution.

ONB launches new website

ONB new homepage

Your city center economic development organization now has a brand new online home. The folks at Operation New Birmingham been working on the new site for several months now, with the formal unveiling scheduled to take place later this month. Head on over and check it out.

We’re particularly happy because of a certain hub for information being included in their “In the News” section.

UPDATED Travelogue: Go to the Classic Parade, get ice cream?

It’s a pretty good deal if you ask me. The folks at Mayfield Ice Cream had spelt spell it out in this blog post on their website (currently cached by Google). They figured that since you can’t throw candy from the floats during the annual Magic City Classic parade, the next best thing would be to hand out free 4 oz. cups of vanilla ice cream.

The weird thing is that a current search of the company’s new blog shows no sign of this post existing. NOTE: Here is the link to the new version of the post, made at 3:43 p.m. local time on October 15. The post has also shown shows a lot of love to the Magic City Classic itself, scheduled to take place next week Saturday, October 27 at historic Legion Field between Alabama A&M and Alabama State.

For those not familiar with the Magic City Classic… well, you’ve just got to see it for yourselves, an experience that can’t be missed. Click here to view their offficial site and here to find out where you need to be standing if they do in fact go ahead with for the free ice cream plan.
