Take a moment: Row-a-thon this Saturday

Now I know that I’m taking away some of Christina’s thunder from her Friday morning post about ideas for the weekend, but hear me out. If you don’t plan on being downtown for the pageantry, music and free ice cream that is this year’s Magic City Classic Parade, perhaps you may want to venture on over to Colonial Brookwood Village and help the University of Alabama crew team out in their efforts to raise money for both themselves and the American Heart Association. Their site’s got more information about the event and how you can give. It’s their football team’s off-week, so there’s no real reason to not go, now is there?

Hand in Paw’s Wine Diva, Rosewood Hall

For those women among you looking for an alternative to the potential of watching runoff elections results for the Birmingham mayoral race, may we suggest an opportunity to give to Hand in Paw while enjoying some wine. If you want to learn more about them, click here to read a story posted during the summer months.

The event page on their official website says that it will be hundreds of women at Rosewood Hall in downtown Homewood, with “wine tasting, door prizes, hors d’oeurves and a diva costume contest.”

They promise to update the site as more information is available, so keep checking on it.

Cost:$50; available online (click here)

Rosewood Hall

Representatives for the owners say that the shop will keep an artsy and energetic atmosphere, possibly even having the occasional DJ dropping in to spin a new tune at any given time.

Vulcan AfterTunes, Vulcan Park

There’s lots to do this weekend around the Magic City. After all that running around, wouldn’t it be nice to just sit back and listen to some tunes? RAIN OR SHINE! Gates open at 1 p.m. Limited parking, carpooling encouraged. Additional parking across Valley Avenue at Jefferson County Board of Education — shuttle provided. “Miss Vulcan 1939,” Vulcan Park

We’ve seen Shakespeare in the park but new this weekend is Vulcan Park, 1701 Valley View Drive, hosting a musical. You’re invited to special outdoor performances of “Miss Vulcan 1939,” by the Red Mountain Theatre Company. The original work is described as the “unpredictable and (somewhat) true story of a meek dime store clerk who challenges the city’s debutantes in a beauty pageant to crown Vulcan’s queen.” Make it a date night Saturday by ordering a gourmet picnic dinner from A Social Affair to enjoy while listening to the pre-show sounds of Emily DeLoach. Sunday’s entertainment includes a Kidzone and scavenger hunts. On both days, ticket holders will be able to tour the park grounds, museum and observation balcony. Find all the details and order tickets on the Red Mountain Theatre Web site.

Saturday cost:$20, 4 and under free

Sunday cost: $20 for adults, $10 for children 5-12, 4 and under free

It’s a grand re-opening in Homewood

Magic City Question: The sign’s going up today

Yes, for those of you that have noticed the big crane atop Red Mountain this morning, there is a new sign joining Vulcan and the transmission towers today. WBRC’s red neon glow will now be joined in the coming days by an NBC peacock courtesy of our local affiliate station.

They did tell us that it was going to happen sooner or later (and we mentioned it in this post). The word from the station during their midday broadcast was that it would be turned on by next week. What do you think about this change from atop the city?
