“Beat the Heat” and visit the BCRI this weekend

Taking advantage of the recent heatwave that has captured the attention (and air conditioners) of Birmingham and the state of Alabama, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) is joining forces with the Coca Cola Bottling Company to open the doors of the interantionally recognized (and newest Smithsonian affiliate) to the public free of charge this Saturday & Sunday (8.18 & 8.19).

Visitors to the facility will receive a free bottle of water as they enter. Check out BCRI’s website for more information.

The Spots live recording, Speakeasy 1920

Yeah, you’ll feel guilty if you don’t go. At least you’ll want to feel guilty if you don’t go. This evening’s event will feature the much anticipated recording and filming of The Spots at Speakeasy. All you really need to know is that it’s a chance to drink Guinness on tap and listen to a good band do a live recording.

The Velvet Teddy Bear signs on for entertainment district

Ruben Studdard - Bob Farley/f8photoJust when people were beginning to wonder just how serious the development talk surrounding the new entertainment district adjacent to the BJCC currently was, The Birmingham News reports that Ruben Studdard has signed on to open a nightclub with Perfroma Entertainment Real Estate.

Reporter Dawn Kent’s brief also included a mention of efforts to get Taylor Hicks to commit to a similar venture for the development. It’s already peaking interest among members of the Soul Patrol across the country.

A restaurant on Morris Avenue? Yep

Fanaei In Matthew’s - Bob Farley/f8photo

Matthew’s Bar and Grill has opened at 2208 Morris Avenue. It now relieves The Peanut Depot of being the only place to grab a bite down near the railroad tracks, though stopping by to grab a snack for later after grabbing some barbecue from the new restaurant still wouldn’t be a bad idea! There haven’t been many options down there since The Morris House, though new ones exist up on 1st Avenue North.

A look at the new bishop

Bishop Baker Portrait - Catholic Diocese Of CharlestonConsidering that Birmingham’s (and the state of Alabama’s) been waiting for the appointment of a new bishop since 2005 to replace retiring Bishop David Foley (it was originally delayed due to the death of Pope John Paul II), we figured it would be interesting to see just what makes this new guy tick. There’s no better way than by hearing from the man himself, so take a look at how Bishop Robert Baker, the new head guy at St. Paul’s and the state of Alabama, started his goodbyes at his current post in Charleston, SC.

He assumes his post here in Alabama on October 2.

“Get Downtown” event postponed

With temperatures predicted to reach above 100 for Thursday, extending the heat wave that The Magic City and the surrounding region is suffering from, ONB has chosen to postpone this Thursday’s installment of Get Downtown event. There has been no make up date announced for the August 16 block party, though it is hopeful that it will be announced soon. You can always check the website to stay up to date on any changes or announcements.

Travelogue: Columbus impressed with Art on the Rocks

We figured every once in a blue moon it might help to see what others think of some of our events here in the Magic City. This first entry takes us to the Commercial Dispatch in Columbus, MS and an extremely positive review of a recent visit to Birmingham for their first trip to Art on the Rocks. The writer talks about the effects that the summertime series has had on our museum and downtown revitalization and how it may be transferred in their community.

You can read our recent post on the August edition of Art on the Rocks (and how you can make a toga to wear to it) over on Timetable, or just get general information about the series direct from the museum’s website.
