While you won’t necessarily see this really cool festival staple today, you will get a chance to see (& get) some great art at this year’s Artwalk festival, going on until 6 p.m. Those that are wanting a taste of the festival, head on over to Timetable to see some images from last night.

For those of you a little hungry, there’s also the National Soul Food Cook-Off taking place at Boutwell Auditorium this afternoon.

The quotes go up tomorrow morning and the t-shirts go on sale Monday!

Yes, we did give away prizes…

There were door prizes given away last night at the launch party. We figured we’d post the winners… over on the prizes page. Go on over and see if you’ve won. (Yes, we will be contacting them as well via email).

We’d like to thank those that provided the prizes again for their generosity.

We called an audible and decided to give away five (5) t-shirts last night. We’d ask the following people to let us know what size t-shirt you want.

  • Caryn Gleason
  • Scott Green
  • Kristy Jaska
  • Emily Peterson
  • Kelly Seward

The shirt (all going well) will be making its debut next weekend when you’ll be seeing folks wearing them around Artwalk. We think you’ll like them. Which leads me to the other five shirts that we were planning to give away last night. We decided we’d hold on to them and give them away next week. We’ll tell you more about that on Tuesday…

Lights! Camera! New city commercial!

BhamviewlogoBirmingham View will be filming a television commercial for the City of Birmingham tomorrow morning (August 28) beginning at 8 a.m. at City Hall in the council chambers (3rd floor). It should be finished in plenty of time for tomorrow’s regularly scheduled council meeting to take place and it’s a great opportunity to show your support for the city.

If you have not seen Birmingham View’s new television show, it airs on Bright House (Ch. 4 – 6:30 p.m., Thursdays) and Charter (Ch. 18 & 24 – 6:30 a.m., Tuesdays) cable stations and it is also available for viewing on their website. They debuted originally in magazine format and have plans to return to print in the near future.

Togas and BBQ (and more) this weekend

There are plenty of things to keep you busy this weekend… so many that we’re going to spend most of the day making sure you know about them whether through our Timetable calendar on our front page and its companion blog. Tonight’s major events are Art on the Rocks at the Museum of Art and Stokin’ the Fire at Sloss Furnaces, both bringing something unique for you this weekend.

Birmingham City Hall Reflected - Photo By Bob Farley

We’re starting to get a clearer picture of the candidates for mayor (well, we hope that we are). Are we getting a clearer picture of what the issues really are in this  year’s race and for the city’s future? We’ll start our editorial series over at my Birmingham tomorrow to take a closer look.
