UPDATE: Joe Webb wins his first NFL start

Joe Webb. Courtesy of Minnesota Vikings website.UPDATE: Joe Webb won his first NFL start this evening, beating the Philadelphia Eagles 24-14.

He threw for 195 yards and ran for 31 yards and a touchdown (and yes, he did the Birmingham Walk afterwards).

If you missed UAB adjunct professor Alice Jackson’s appearance on Jeopardy this evening (we’re still trying to figure out how she did), don’t worry…

There’s another chance to see a member of the UAB alumni community in action on television tonight.

Joe Webb will follow up his performance last week – including his first NFL regular season touchdown – with his first career start. Incidentally, that touchdown last week made Webb the first UAB Blazer to score an NFL touchdown at quarterback. The start will be against the Eagles in Philadelphia after it was postponed on Sunday night due to concern for public safety.

It’s going to be historic in another way too; this will be the first NFL regular season game played on a Tuesday since 1946.

Joe Webb scores 1st NFL touchdown during MNF

Birmingham native and former UAB starting quarterback Joe Webb ran 13 yards for the Minnesota Vikings to record his first career NFL touchdown during Monday night’s 40-17 loss to the Chicago Bears at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, MN.

The Wenonah High School graduate was originally scheduled to start last night for the Vikings but future NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favre had other plans, starting for the 298th time in his career instead after his consecutive starts streak ended last week.

A sack knocked Favre out of the game in the 2nd quarter with a head injury, leading to Webb taking over behind center. He finished the game completing 15 of his 26 pass attempts, good for 129 yards. He had one fumble, two interceptions and three sacks to go along with that touchdown.

Saturday’s Birmingham News interview of Webb covered not just the understandable nervousness about this game, but also the unusual conditions associated with it.

The Tar Heels visits UAB Tuesday for NIT quarterfinal

UAB Blazers logoUnless you’ve been hiding out somewhere for the last few days, someone has to have already told you that the UAB Blazers will be playing host to last year’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament champions, UNC Chapel Hill, tomorrow evening at Bartow Arena (8 p.m. tipoff) for a men’s postseason NIT quarterfinal matchup. If not, well now you have.

The Blazers beat NC State to advance while the Tar Heels defeated Mississippi State. If you were hoping for a ticket for tomorrow night, you’re most likely out of luck. The game is officially sold out with some folks reselling them on eBay for as much as $400 each (though no one’s selling them on StubHub… yet). Plus, the game will be shown on ESPN.

There’s already a final score prediction on UAB’s student newspaper’s website while the folks at al.com have already set up a live chat for tomorrow’s game. Plus, earlier this afternoon there was word that UNC sophomore forward Tyler Zeller may not be available tomorrow evening, perhaps giving fans in Blazer Nation additional reasons for hope.

UAB awards scholarship to newborn

He was selected in a random drawing by the UAB Health System to receive a full, undergraduate tuition scholarship to UAB (which should no doubt come in quite handy when he’s eligible to enroll in 2027). His sister is shown here congratulating him as his parents, Kwanetta Humphrey and Bruce Smith, received the news on Monday afternoon.

La’Issac was the first of five newborns to enjoy the comforts of the new UAB Women and Infants Center when it opened this past Sunday, February 21, providing the back story (via UAB’s News service) for his good fortune. The 430,000 square foot facility is the newest addition to the university’s medical center campus, carrying with it a $164 million price tag.

That translates into a state of the art facility – one that does indeed “…feel more like a first-class hotel than a hospital.” Got a feeling that the patients will appreciate it.

PostSecrets to be revealed at UAB on Thursday

IMG_0583 joelogon/FlickrIf you’re not familiar with the popular blog PostSecret, you may want to click on the link and get acquainted; then you’ll have a reason to be excited about the creator of the site, blogger Frank Warren, being in Birmingham on Thursday evening, October 22.

UAB’s student newspaper, Kaleidoscope, first reported about the lecture, entitled “The Most Trusted Speaker in America: Frank Warren’s ‘PostSecret,’” last week. Warren’s also included the appearance on recent blog posts and in Facebook invitations to his appearances. UAB students get in for free while general admission tickets will be $10.

No, it’s not Pole Position

It is a great new tool available at UAB to help get patients back on the road… It may also help avoid the estimated 4,000 – 8,000 crashes per year caused by distracted drivers as reported by AAA.

Some drivers are dealing with certain types of illnesses or they are elderly. Enter the $100,000 driving simulator at the UAB Driving Assessment Clinic funded in part by the National Institute on Aging.

The interactive simulator allows for patients to be tested for 30 minute sessions using a 130° field of view and giving them an opportunity to experience several different types of driving conditions.
