1040 Fest, 24th Street and 3rd Avenue North

The IRS tax deadline is approaching, and that means it’s time for 1040 Fest.

The event is an annual music festival sponsored by Birmingham’s Central City Neighborhood Association & held across the street from the city’s downtown post office each year on tax day.

The residents and their event partners take advantage of the branch’s extended hours (due to the many late filers) and the media coverage that follows because of it to show off just how great the downtown area is to be in.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, food and drink… and their tax returns if they haven’t filed them yet Smile

Cost: Free

Location:
Intersection of 24th Street and 3rd Avenue North

28th Anniversary celebration, Jim Reed Books

We’re not the only ones celebrating an anniversary on March 14.

Jim Reed Books has known a few locations around Birmingham but still serves as its unofficial Museum of Fond Memories. Definitely consisting of much more than books, it has become an institution for many in The Magic City.

Stop on by throughout the day to say hello (and thanks) to Jim, browse the stacks and trigger your own memories while finding out just how entertaining it can be!

Critical Mass rolls through Birmingham tonight

The grassroots movement known as Critical Mass will attempt to make its presence known in Birmingham this evening at 6 p.m. Their inaugural ride will begin at Linn Park downtown. These rides, which take place monthly throughout the country (and the world) are geared to remind drivers that cyclists should be allowed to share the road and that they’re here.

The cyclists follow all of the rules of the road, emphasizing bicycle safety and a sustainable method of transportation. There’s no real leader or plan to the route – it just seems to happen (and it’s been happening now for more than 15 years). As you can see, the longer it goes, the more people get involved – like the scene from NYC up above.

Get more information and a description of the games at the Come Out and Play Game Shows website.

Cost: Free, with somewhat valuable prizes. If you don’t go, you’ll never know who you might meet . . . and beat!

This longtime downtown Birmingham sign will soon be going away. Harbert Realty Services announced this morning that they will be demolishing the former La Paree restaurant, located at 2013 5th Avenue North, to allow for more space in the planned 4-Diamond Marriott Renaissance Hotel. The $52 million luxury hotel will be contained in the former Regions Bank headquarters at the intersection of 5th Avenue North and 20th Street.
