Sidewalk, Lipstick make changes

While we first heard rumblings about the possible firing of Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival executive director Catherine Pfitzer on Wednesday evening, this post from Wade on Birmingham confirmed it on Saturday morning. Pfitzer had served as the executive director for the organization for approximately two years and had held other positions with the film festival. Wade’s post includes excerpts from the email announcement as well as one from Pfitzer thanking supporters and encouraging them to continue to support the festival. Entries are already being accepted for this year’s edition, scheduled for September 25-27.

The other surprising news this past week was of the shut down of one of Birmingham’s newest magazines, Lipstick, as confirmed on the Media of Birmingham blog. The March issue will be the publication’s last. The entire staff was laid off as of Friday and former editor Tina Hatch reflected on it via her blog.

Crestwood Coffee Company… for now

Pye Parson recently became the new owner of the Crestwod Coffee Company on Birmingham’s East side. Pye also owns Birmingham IN spot Sol Garden two doors down from the neighborhood hangout spot, though she’s not sure of her plans for that space when its lease is up later this year.

Since implemented and proposed changes include allowing customers to establish accounts and regaining its beer and wine license in the near future, it only makes sense to consider changing the name. If you stop by, consider dropping a suggestion in the box at the bar.

The rates went up, the birds are gone

Electric Meter on the Back of the House, MRBECK/FlickrHere’s to hoping that Alabama Power‘s long time spokesbirds, Ben and Mickey, enjoy their permanent trip south for the winter. The state’s Public Service Commission asked that the public utility reduce the amount of advertising they do and focus any new ones on encouraging energy efficiency and conservation. Those will be words that many more APCO customers will embrace as the PSC approved a base connection fee that will raise the average customer bill by $15/month starting in January. That’s after an 8.3% rate increase starting with your next bill raising bills an average of $9.30/month. The good news is that we won’t see another rate increase until 2010.

UPDATE: The carousel continues with shuffling dial positions

WJOX's new logo - radio station's websiteUPDATE, 3;45 p.m., 7.23.2008: Word’s come in from Scott Register himself that Reg’s Coffee House will be broadcasting from 100.5 FM beginning this Sunday, July 27. Spread the word!

If you haven’t figured it out, WJOX has shifted its FM frequency to the spot formerly occupied by Y94.5 FM. While the site had not been completely redirected as of yet, the sports station’s website has already been rebranded complete with a redesigned station logo. We’re still not quite sure what’s going to happen to the frequency that once housed The X; it appears that they don’t know either as tuning your radio to the station (if you still do that) points you to a spot where signals sound like they’re crossed right now.

UPDATE: So, about our t-shirts…

UPDATE: 4.18.2008, 9 p.m., We figured it was time to let you know that we actually have started selling t-shirts in house…Click here to learn more about it. UPDATE: 12.18.2007, 10 a.m., After some discussions with our supplier, we’ve decided to hold off on launching our new store until mid-January. They have assured me that anyone that orders any of the shirts currently available will receive them within 7 business days. While that may not necessarily get you a shirt in time for Christmas Day, you can extend the giving season through those twelve days of Christmas…This is also where I remind you that black short-sleeve Terminal Ts are currently available at Highlands Trading Company in Five Points South and beginning today at Java and Jams downtown (20th Street near 4th Avenue North). The price will be between $18 – $20 a piece.

We just found out that some of you that ordered Terminal Ts have not received them. We have just learned of the problem and apologize profusely (yes, I just used the word profusely in a blog post). I’m aware that you’ve been refunded your payments; if you haven’t, please let me know. If you are still interested in purchasing a t-shirt to show your love for Birmingham’s hub for conversation (especially during these final days of the holiday season), I’ve got two possible solutions. I’ll have some black t-shirts with me on Thursday over at Bottletree if you’re interested for $15 a piece. Your second option is to visit our new online store tomorrow morning and pick up a shirt there (though it will cost a little more). If you’re wanting a shirt in a different color (including, starting tomorrow, orange) , a long sleeve shirt, or just want to see what else we came up with to put the logo on, the online store may be the better option. Plus, if you’re interested in getting those items as Christmas gifts, there’s still time to order them and have them arrive.
