So what’s up with our calendar?

That’s been a popular question in recent weeks… it’s not because we aren’t wanting to put information up. It’s because we’re preparing to launch a new one. We wanted to make sure that we were offering the best services possible while living up to our tagline of being Birmingham’s hub. It’s our hope to launch our new system (and a couple other surprises) in two weeks. If you want to learn more and want to help us launch it, drop me a line.

In the meantime, we’d ask that you use our current calendar submission form or email/DM/call us using the many methods available on our contact page (though we’d suggest sending event submissions to timetable@bhamterminal.com).  We’ll do our best to post information about events on Timetable (which is also undergoing a redesign of its own of sorts – pardon the construction).

First Church’s doors are open

First United Methodist Church in downtown Birmingham’s got a busy week on tap.

First, they’re celebrating as Open House, their new mid-week service of “prayer, meditation and music,” begins this evening at 5 p.m., with the church’s historic entryway on 19th Street North opening at 4:30 p.m. The ability to enjoy some quiet reflection is something that all of us seek at one time or another regardless of religious affiliation.

We’ve also learned that this Sunday U.S. Congressman Artur Davis will be speaking in the church’s dining hall between 9:45 – 10:45 a.m. The man who seconded the Democratic presidential candidate’s nomination been told he can talk about whatever he wishes, though he’s been asked to make comments about the role of communities of faith in urban settings.

It’s time to show off your super powers

Superhero 5K 2007 photo - courtesy of Living United's blogThe United Way Superhero 5K will be swinging into action for its 2nd year this Saturday. According to the announcement in their email blast, “…our league of superheroes will be saving our community from the masked villains of cardiovascular disease and childhood obesity.” It’s also mentioned on the organization’s Living United blog.

Prizes will be awarded for race results and best costumes so if you’re not planning to blow away the competition and you still want a prize, you can still dress like Batman. Organizers have added a 1 mile Fun Run in case you want to bring the kids along or if you just don’t feel like running for 3.2 miles. It starts at 8 a.m. at the Gold’s Gym @ The Colonnade and you can register at any Trak Shak location or via active.com.

Banksy was here

The popular British street artist was recently in the metro Birmingham area after a stop in New Orleans.

An account was posted on On Email yesterday of a couple of folks trying to find/visit the site. Unfortunately according to some of the buzz out there, you won’t have the opportunity to see it live anymore, though Arik Sokol’s photoset is still available.

Random Shots: A Olympic sign in the window

About a month or so ago, Mimi Street, one of the barbers at The Tutwiler Barbershop, and one of her regulars, Stacey Elliott, were joking around Mayor Larry Langford’s desire for the Birmingham to host the 2020 Olympics. A short time later Elliott, who works for Source One Legal Copy, brought in a sign proclaiming the Tutwiler Barbershop as the official barbershop of the 2020 Olympics. “It was one of those ha ha funny things,” Street said. The sign has been in the window ever since. Continue reading

For those of you wanting to keep track of what’s going on with Hurricane Gustav, there are several ways to find out, including a page created to keep track of tweets and website links about the major hurricane currently preparing for landfall in the Gulf Coast, set up on JazzyChad.com.

Here in Birmingham The Birmingham News reports that shelters are ready to house as many as 2,400 residents fleeing the storm, though officials are expecting that as many as 4,000 may come to the metro area. Early reports suggest that they may need just a little more space. Those seeking information on shelter locations should call 800.206.0816.
