It’s Battle for the Bones time tonight

If you’re so inclined to skip watching the vice presidential debate live or attending any of the numerous networking events this evening, you may want to head on over to Legion Field as UAB prepares to play Memphis, otherwise known as the annual Battle for the Bones contest. They play for The Bones that you see to your left and while it’s too late to register to win some of the more than $3,000 in prizes, there’s still plenty of time to go and enjoy at the very least the smell of all that barbecue.

The Weekly’s going to be fine

There are only a few of us that even knew that Creative Loafing, Inc. was a minority owner of one of our local alternatives, Birmingham Weekly, before Tuesday’s report in the Birmingham Business Journal. While “The Loaf” prepares to go through (and hopefully successfully emerge from) Chapter 11 bankruptcy, The Weekly let us know that it’s going to be business as usual and that it should not be affected. If they follow the lead of CL though, we’ll begin to see a migration to an online product in the near future.

A Scrollworks update

For those of you that saw my earlier post on my Birmingham about the problems facing Scrollworks and their benefit event this weekend, we’ve received some great news – word that the bill is now down to $163.

Good news for Scrollworks, who will hopefully see some of you at their event on Saturday night.

UPDATE: Scrollworks needs our help

UPDATE: 10.1.2008, 6:15 p.m. Good news…

UPDATE: 10.1.2008, 4 p.m., We’ve received word that things may be getting worked out. We’d still encourage anyone who can to attend Saturday’s performance.

Scrollworks needs our help with regards to this weekend’s planned performance and educational session by Barrage. There’s a chance that it may not be able to happen. Find out more over on my Birmingham.

A Community Agreement is ready for Birmingham

We the People, in order to form a more perfect school system…” Those are the words that introduce readers to the Community Agreement developed through the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham‘s  Yes We Can! Birmingham campaign as the result of months of Community Conversations allowing input from residents across the city’s 99 neighborhoods about what they wanted to see for our school system’s children. Approximately 1,800 people participated in the conversations, focused on the following two questions: What kind of community do you envision for the future? and What kind of schools do we need to get us there?

The agreement was unveiled at a gathering held at Vulcan Park this past Saturday morning. It is available as a PDF for you to review and download.

Transit chief heads to the West Coast

Remember the series I was going to file about San Francisco? Well, we’ve held off because of the prominent role transit was going to have in it – didn’t make sense to talk about their system when ours was going through (and continues to go through) a period of turmoil. Well, now David Hill will be responsible for that city’s Muni System bus fleet as he resigns as executive director of the BJCTA on October 17. He’ll also be able to do something we can’t right now; ride one of our old street cars. Or he can ride the commuter rail down to Riverside, CA and compare notes with another former BJCTA executive director, Mark Stanley.

David Neal’s back… on CBS

The Birmingham Business Journal has reported that former Fox 6 chief meteorologist David Neal is returning to the airwaves as a weekend meteorologist for CBS 42. Neal, who was fired from Birmingham’s Fox affiliate earlier this year and settled a lawsuit in July that he filed as a result, will begin his new gig this weekend.

UPDATE: He’s also working for WeatherNationTV.
