A reason to bundle up today

It may be too late to put one on this morning, but we thought you’d be interested in knowing what some folks across the world are doing today to honor Fred Rogers on what would have been his 80th birthday. It comes from a place that many consider one of our sister cities:

Marathoners take over downtown this weekend

I could tell you that we’ve been quiet this week because of getting ready for the Mercedes Marathon on Sunday, though I’d be lying (as much as I wish I wasn’t).

Mercedes Marathon logoThis year the Mercedes Marathon will take over Birmingham’s central business district (and parts of the metro area) on both Saturday and Sunday, February 9 & 10. We’d like to take a moment and look at the charities that will benefit from the masses of humanity moving through town this weekend (and to find out why you should be out there cheering them on as they run/walk/dance through your part of town):

BTW: There’s still time to sign up at the expo too (tonight and tomorrow) 🙂

Take a Moment: Consider giving your time on MLK Day

It’s not too late to register for Hands On Birmingham‘s annual Day of Service. Their goal is to get 2,000 volunteers working for good across the Birmingham metro area on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. They’ve got a wide range of projects from painting classrooms to landscaping. It’s quite a list and there is something for every skill range. HOB is hoping you’ll “make your day off a day on.”

The day kicks off with a Kick-off luncheon at 11:30 a.m. for all pre-registered volunteers in the Boutwell Auditorium Upstairs Exhibition Hall. Volunteers are encouraged to bring a canned good for Greater Birmingham Ministries and Collat Jewish Family Services. After lunch, it’s time to do good from 1-4 p.m. All volunteers will receive a free t-shirt at their project site. Feeling good for helping others ain’t bad either.

Volunteer Open House, Vulcan Park & Museum

Vulcan Park is looking for new recruits for their volunteer program!

They’ve seen a recent increase in attendance and have several school field trips booked for the New Year, leading to an expanded effort to recruit new docents (tour guides) and volunteers.

They’re inviting the public to attend this informal event to learn more about their volunteer program and its benefits. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet museum staff and current volunteers, ask questions and get a private “docent-led” tour of the Museum. Light refreshments will be served.

No formal experience is required; time commitments dependent upon volunteer position. Participants must be at least 18 years old.

Take a moment: An option for Christmas cards this year

If you haven’t already completed writing Christmas cards to that long list of friends around the country, and you still need a few more, The Greater Birmingham Humane Society may be just the place for you.

You’ve got until this Saturday, December 15, to head on over to their website or visit their offices on Snow Drive to have them send Christmas cards on your behalf. You may also visit their offices and purchase cards for $1/each; just contact them to let them know how many you might need.

They also have ornaments available at their gift shop and at Generation Dog in Homewood for $10/each. It’s a great way to support a good cause.
