Baseball’s all time greats from Alabama on parade

David Knox over at The News has compiled a list of MLB all-star Alabama natives in time for the start of the second half of the MLB season.

It’s definitely a unique list, with everyone from The Say Hey Kid, to the Wizard of Oz, to a guy that knew it all. An interesting way to get ready for the 2nd half of the season, even if the biggest story may be taking place this weekend in The City of Brotherly Love as the Phillies will inevitably become the first professional sports franchise in modern history to record 10,000 losses (on Friday the 13th even).

AAFL one step closer to reality in Birmingham

AFFL logoThe All American Football League (AAFL) is the latest attempt to create a 2nd professional football league here in the United States. Ironically their first tryouts, being held in Orlando through today, are taking place shortly after the dissolving of the NFL’s European league, providing an additional pool of athletes as they prepare for a spring 2008 opening. They are hoping that collegiate ties, including have a former NCAA President as it’s commissioner, will allow it to succeed where others have failed.

Legion Field is said to be one of the locations that has been secured for games, meaning that Birmingham is in line to get a team. The Capstone Report (music loop) is taking the wait and see approach about the success of the new venture, a position that seems to be shared by potential host universities, including Purdue as IndyStar.com reports.

Barons win! Barons win!

The Birmingham Barons defeated the Jacksonville Suns 3-2 at the 12th annual Rickwood Classic at historic Rickwood Field. More than 5,800 turned out for the game during which the Barons donned uniforms from their affiliation with the Kansas City/Oakland A’s MLB franchise.

Just in case you didn’t know, the 12th annual Rickwood Classic will be played tomorrow afternoon at 12:35 p.m. You can always check out our calendar entry to learn more information or click on the ad if you feel like taking a long lunch out on the west side.

America’s oldest ballpark’s place in the hearts of most baseball fans is best captured in this piece written earlier this month for ESPN.com‘s SportsTravel section by Jim Caple.

It’s also worth noting that during the game the Birmingham Barons plan to honor Peter Bragan, Sr., chairman of the board of the Jacksonville Suns, the Barons’ opponent for the game. Bragan is a Birmingham native and he will be accompanied by his family to celebrate the honor.

Check back tomorrow afternoon for a photo gallery from the game (unless we see you out there).

12th Annual Rickwood Classic, Rickwood Field

The Birmingham Barons once again take the field at their original home, Rickwood Field (a.k.a. – America’s oldest ballpark!) this afternoon to face the Jacksonville Suns.

This year’s game will honor the 1964 & 1965 teams – they’ll be the guys wearing gold. The team is significant due to it being the first integrated team to represent the city of Birmingham. Check out the write up on the Barons’ official site and learn the history of the "Orange Alert baseball".

The game starts at 12:35 p.m. Tickets are currently available online as well as at the Barons box office.

Or you could just click on the ad sitting to your right and go directly to the online purchase option…
