Mona is euthanized

Mona the elephantThe Birmingham News is reporting that Mona the elephant, a longtime resident at the Birmingham Zoo, was euthanized this morning.

She was believed to be at least 56 years old and had been having problems standing in her exhibit space recent days.

Susie, her longtime companion, died in January 2005.

State tax holiday, part deux

The state’s Department of Revenue recently announced that we’d be enjoying our second sales tax holiday on August 3 – 5. According to their website, the holiday provides shoppers "the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers, and clothing free of state sales or use tax." It also means that you can get that MacBook Pro you’ve been eyeing in Jefferson County and only pay 1% in taxes (for education).

Here’s the list of cities and counties that are participating this year (note that as of yesterday the city of Birmingham had not officially decided if they would participate, though they did last year). The list will be updated as more governments let the state know of their decisions.

Mr. Obama comes to Birmingham (next month)

Campaign for Change has been busy today posting Myspace bulletins announcing the pending arrival of 2008 presidential hopeful Barack Obama in Birmingham, Alabama.

He will be making his first visit of the campaign season to the Magic City on July 9, speaking to an audience at the Sheraton Birmingham downtown. He’ll be the latest in the string of presidential hopefuls coming to garner support of party locals. Just last week, Sen. John McCain decided to come into town the Friday night of City Stages.

Election ’07: One announces, another tests the water

William BellThis weekend current Birmingham City Councilor and former interim mayor William Bell announced his plans to run for mayor. The announcement was made in the Sunday edition of The Birmingham News.

We reported earlier this month that a website was “parked” by Bell and that signs had already begun appearing throughout the city. As of 9:15 a.m. this morning, the site was now not available for viewing at all, a sure sign that it will be operational in the coming days after content is added. We will update you when we are aware of its launch. Continue reading
