Our image of the new Ronald McDonald House is not nearly as cool as the image shown at this morning’s ONB Breakfast Briefing. It was taken about two months ago while the building was under construction. Yesterday it began service as the new home of the 5th oldest Ronald McDonald House worldwide (and it opened debt-free). Midtown’s happening
The development of Birmingham’s midtown district was the focus of today’s ONB Breakfast Briefing. Today’s meeting focused on several new developments in the area, including the new Hyatt Place property to be located on the former Williams Cadillac site along 20th Street South. Joyrides and cats on leashes
While many people are focusing on Lipscomb’s mayor using an impounded vehicle as his own (for city purposes of course), the more interesting story comes out of Pleasant Grove.
There they voted to add cats to the city’s leash law. Apparently there are a lot of cats roaming the streets of the Birmingham suburb. So it’s time to make sure that the little ones have tags identifying who they belong to, otherwise it’s $25 for the first offense, with fines going up to $50 & $75 afterwards. Wonder what happens when the cats meet up with the dogs while they’re out for their afternoon walks…

A day of silence online
Fans of Birmingham, Alabama’s local internet radio stations like Fried Green Radio and Radio Free Birmingham were getting prepared for it for weeks, yet it still sounds weird. Even one of the pioneers of the movement, WMVY in Martha’s Vineyard, is doing it. Visit these sites and you’re sure to hear silence, or maybe just the sound of crickets in the background.
This is the result of a silent protest organized by large and small online stations alike to draw attention to increased royalty fees that have been proposed by the Copyright Royalty Board and that are scheduled to go into effect beginning in March. Check out the sites to learn more about why it’s being done and what you can do to help.
