Follow-up: Skirt’s not shelved yet

This morning The Birmingham News picked up where the Birmingham Business Journal, Media of Birmingham and ourselves left off in terms of reporting on the end of skirt! Magazine’s affiliation with Media General.

However, earlier today, skirt! Birmingham’s Twitter feed shared a link to a post made by the director of digital media for skirt.com. It seems that fans of the site should keep an eye out for any additional news as it becomes available.

What’s next for skirt! in Birmingham?

skirtlogoEarlier this afternoon Skirt! Magazine here in Birmingham announced via its Twitter feed that it would no longer be associated with Media General, owners of NBC13HD. Subsequent tweets asked for anyone interested in helping save the magazine to contact them via direct message on Twitter (typing the letter “d” in front of their username (skirtBirmingham) or via email. The magazine was founded in 1994 in Charleston, SC and Birmingham is one of 23 markets currently served by it. They do plan to move forward with the local edition of the publication.

Fox 6 unveils new website

The new look for the WBRC – Fox 6 website appears to be a little more streamlined than its predecessor.

One thing noticeable on under the About Us > Personalities section of the site is the absence of the profiles for Chris Montana, one of the 10 employees that were let go by the Birmingham, AL Fox affiliate late last week. I’ll also say that it was weird not to see morning traffic reporter Brooke Allen’s profile either…

The station’s celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.

Sidewalk, Lipstick make changes

While we first heard rumblings about the possible firing of Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival executive director Catherine Pfitzer on Wednesday evening, this post from Wade on Birmingham confirmed it on Saturday morning. Pfitzer had served as the executive director for the organization for approximately two years and had held other positions with the film festival. Wade’s post includes excerpts from the email announcement as well as one from Pfitzer thanking supporters and encouraging them to continue to support the festival. Entries are already being accepted for this year’s edition, scheduled for September 25-27.

The other surprising news this past week was of the shut down of one of Birmingham’s newest magazines, Lipstick, as confirmed on the Media of Birmingham blog. The March issue will be the publication’s last. The entire staff was laid off as of Friday and former editor Tina Hatch reflected on it via her blog.

Where’s Brooke Smith?

Looks like we’ve had a lot of folks stumbling onto The Terminal recently trying to find out where NBC 13 traffic anchor Brooke Smith is. Well, according to her blog on the station’s website she hasn’t gone that far. The Albertville native is now preparing to host the latest edition to daytime news programming, Daytime Alabama, airing after their midday news broadcast.

The show doesn’t officially premiere until next month, though preview episodes aired last week.

Kyle threatened with “the boot”

We’re not really sure if Jefferson County Commission president Bettye Fine Collins would have really kicked out Birmingham Weekly columnist Kyle Whitmire at the end of today’s post meeting conference. All we’ll say is imagine what the post over on Mixed Media would have been if she had.

Kyle’s piece from earlier today includes video from last week and links to the comments made by Collins that he attempted to raise questions about.
