Happi boutique opening, downtown Homewood

Calling all fashionistas and fashionistos to 1817-B 29th Ave. South, next to Dave’s Pizza. There you will find HAPPI (site under construction), the metro area’s newest boutique for men and women. Birmingham’s got a new Catholic bishop

Baker portraitOr at least he will be officially late this afternoon. Robert Baker will be installed as the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham  during a 3 p.m. service at St. Paul’s Cathedral downtown. There will be a procession leading into the church including several dignitaries that are mentioned in this brief over on the Decatur Daily website.

The installation service will also be broadcast live over the EWTN Network who will be airing a rebroadcast of the event on Wednesday evening beginning at 11 p.m. for those that are not able to see it today. Or you could just click here and watch it live on your computer screen.

God Delusion Debate to be streamed online

If you have not already heard, The God Delusion Debate taking place this Wednesday at the Alys Stephens Center (see our post by clicking here) has sold out. According to The Birmingham News, the BBC and NPR will be recording the debate for their own purposes, but according to the Fixed-Point Foundation’s website, the event will be broadcast live on the Moody Broadcasting Network and streamed on their website. They will have feeds available for both RealPlayer and Windows Media Player.

The debate will feature Dr. John Lennox (pictured left) and Professor Richard Dawkins.

Taste of 4th Avenue Jazz Festival, 4th Avenue Historic District

During this weekend of festivals, head on over to the  4th Avenue Historic District for the Taste of 4th Avenue Jazz Festival. From our own Birmingham Heritage Jazz Band to the smooth sounds of Dee Lucas to the legendary Foxxy Fatts (1998 Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame inductee), there’s bound to be something for everyone, where you’re a jazz aficionado or not.

Sidewalk ’07: Opening Night

The 9th edition of the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival is underway in downtown Birmingham on a weekend where busy is the word across the Magic City. The nationally recognized independent film festival began with a showing of The Ten and a preview of what was to come for the weekend. Vulcan AfterTunes, Vulcan Park

There’s lots to do this weekend around the Magic City. After all that running around, wouldn’t it be nice to just sit back and listen to some tunes? You can do just that at Vulcan Park Sunday afternoon. The first of three Vulcan AfterTunes Concerts will feature the music of Bobby Bare Jr. and The Michael Warren Band. Here’s the info to know from the Vulcan Park Web site: Lawn chairs and blankets are strongly encouraged. No pets or outside alcohol allowed. A cash bar will be available. Smoke-free environment. RAIN OR SHINE! Gates open at 1 p.m. Limited parking, carpooling encouraged. Additional parking across Valley Avenue at Jefferson County Board of Education — shuttle provided. Can’t make it this Sunday? Future concerts are scheduled for Oct. 14 and Oct. 28.

Cost: $8, children 4 and under and Vulcan Park Foundation members free

Whistle Stop Festival, Downtown Irondale

Just down the road from downtown Birmingham in downtown Irondale, will be the annual Whistle Stop Festival, named for  “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café” by Fannie Flagg. The festival will have arts and crafts, memorabilia from the city’s past and  of course, fried green tomatoes along with other Southern foods, free music, rock climbing, a moon walk, face painting and a dog show among other things.
