Downtown Get Together, Birmingham Museum of Art

Here’s a great chance to learn more about what’s going on in downtown Birmingham! Operation New Birmingham, the Downtown Business Association, Birmingham Beverage Company and the Central City Neighborhood Association have joined forces to present this second ever Get Downtown event.

It’s a great opportunity to meet downtown business owners, managers and residents. This time the fun takes place at the Birmingham Museum of Art and it will give you yet another opportunity to view the Pompeii exhibit.

Cost: $0 to attend/$14 to view the Pompeii exhibit

Do Dah Day’s looking for 2008 T-shirt design

2007 Do Dah Day designThey’ve put out a call to artists in print (here’s the link to their site, though there is currently no mention of the open call there). You’ve got until Friday, January 11 to get in your design for the 2008 Do Dah Day t-shirt. Anyone seeking additional information should email dodahdayart@bellsouth.net. There are some requirements, including:

  • Inclusion of one dog and one cat in design
  • Saying this year’s festival date (May 17, 2008)
  • Must be four-color art
  • Say “In support of local animal shelters”
  • Say Birmingham, AL
  • have their website – dodahday.org – somewhere in the design

You won’t get paid, at least not monetarily; you will be able to get stuff with your logo on it and the thanks of members of their board, sponsors and four-legged friends all over metro Birmingham.

So we’re going to have a little get-together

Terminal Red logoWe figured that since everybody else was throwing a holiday party, why not the new kid on the block! Though we’re not quite as established as our fellow media outlets in town (read: no money), we thought it would be cool to swarm an area venue and give folks a chance to meet up and say hello before the holidays got away from us. So, this Thursday (December 20), 5 p.m. at The Bottletree, we’ll hope that some folks decide to come on out for Happy Hour!

We’ve got invites floating out there on Facebook, MySpace and Upcoming.org. Pass it along to others if you can. We realize it’s last minute so we may not see many folks, but we figured we’d give it a shot. If we don’t get a chance to say hello in person and pick up a t-shirt for a gift this holiday season (more on that later today), thanks for checking out the site. We really appreciate it.

Jr. Patrons’ Roman Holiday, WorkPlay Theatre

The Junior Patrons of the Birmingham Museum of Art are hosting a Roman Holiday, inspired by the ongoing Pompeii exhibit currently on display downtown. The dressy casual affair will feature a silent auction where attendees can bid on olive jars designed by local artists as well as a few folks whose names you might know – Courtney Cox, Jennifer Aniston and Eva Longoria. Heavy hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and music by The Lava Lamps round out the fun.

Cost: $20 in advance; $25 at the door. Tickets may be purchased on the museum’s website.

The Show #2, Matthew’s Bar & Grill

No, it’s not an error in our system (though we do have a few). Last week’s first major event for the newly formed Birmingham Art Collective, at one of Birmingham’s newest restaurants, Matthew’s Bar and Grill was so well received that they’ve sent us an email saying that they’re going to be doing an encore. We do not know any additional details about performances at this time.

We do know that it’s The Show, and it’s enjoying a return appearance.

The Collective includes many area artists, writers and musicians. You can download their poster or visit their Facebook group or MySpace profile to learn more information about them and their efforts.

Cost: $0 (though you’ll want to have cash ready for the bar)

Location:
Matthew’s Bar and Grill
