OTM Democratics Healthcare Forum, Birmingham Botanical Gardens

You’re not going to find a better panel than this one to talk about this important issue:

  • Congressman Artur Davis, 7th District, Alabama
  • Terry Kellogg, Executive Vice President & CFO, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Alabama
  • Dr. Max Michael, Dean of the UAB School of Public Health
  • Dr. Wally Retan, practicing physician and state coordinator of Healthcare For Everyone, the Alabama Chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program

The OTM Democrats are inviting you to join them for a lively exchange on the current problems in our nation’s healthcare system and the various solutions being proposed to address them. They hope to

explore the disparity in access to healthcare in the U.S., HR676 (the bill before Congress to create a single payer healthcare system), the positions of the leading presidential candidates, and whether there is enough momentum and support in Congress, industry, and from citizens themselves to bring about meaningful reform.

Sixteenth Street/ First Church joint dinner

That was the question being asked by congregates of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church and First United Methodist Church earlier this evening. The two church families gathered at Sixteenth Street for a joint Thanksgiving service.

This was the third year that the two downtown houses of worship gathered together. The congregations take turns visiting each other’s facilities, with the minister from the other church delivering the sermon. This year Rev. John Rutland of First United Methodist Church had the honors.

The image above was taken during the joint Thanksgiving dinner held after the service.

New chapel dedication, Jimmie Hale Mission

The Jimmie Hale Mission’s chapel at the newly relocated Shepura Men’s Center will be named Sunday in honor of its 90-year-old co-founder, Jessie Hale Downs. Her dedication and faith has withstood the tests of time and has helped shape the 63-year-old organization. Executive Director Tony Cooper will kick off the ceremony at 2 p.m. Guests will have the opportunity to hear a testimony from a Mission client whose life has been transformed by the Jimmie Hale Mission ministries.

The former school teacher and her late husband, Jimmie Hale, started the Mission in 1944 as a storefront chapel to help the hungry, hurting and homeless. Jimmie soon passed away leaving his pregnant wife to carry out their vision. This single, working mom ran the Mission until 1990 relying on faith and surviving breast cancer.

The Jimmie Hale Mission is a Christian-based, 501c3 charitable organization that does not receive United Way funding. For more information, call 205-323-5878 or visit www.jimmiehalemission.com.

Got plans this weekend?

Sure it’s the big race weekend in Talladega. But we know that not everyone’s eyes will be on the first Car of Tomorrow run at the superspeedway. There is a ton of “cultural” stuff to do around town Saturday and Sunday. Here’s just the ones we know about. We miss something? Share the 411 with an e-mail to info@bhamterminal.com.

More after the jump…
