New Vulcan’s moving along

New Vulcan Ale House in progress

Special to The Terminal.

Exterior and interior demolition work has finally started recently (and quickly) on what will be the New Vulcan Ale House. Birmingham’s newest brew pub will occupy the former home for the Jimmie Hale Mission across from the main branch of the U.S. Post Office at 3rd Avenue & 24th Street North downtown.

Those that would like to find out a little more about the concept, look no further than this post made to Bhamdining.com back in late October or this story filed for the Birmingham News earlier that week.

Thanks to Jarrod for the tip.

Now you can find out if Cleveland really rocks…

Continental Airlines recently announced that they were starting nonstop service to Cleveland, OH from Birmingham, AL. Well, today’s the official ceremony recognizing the beginning of the service – even though service actually started yesterday. The flights will be operated by ExpressJet flying under the Continental Express flag.

There will be two chances to leave The Magic City daily to check out the Rock & Roll Music Hall of Fame, the Indians and (most importantly for basketball fans) LeBron James and whoever the other team is that’s playing the Cavaliers

… and we get a chance to win over some more converts.

Random Shots: A reminder of what’s to come

This is one of two banners that are hanging on the corner of the former Regions Bank headquarters in downtown Birmingham that were installed earlier this week. The signs announce the pending arrival of a Renaissance Hotel in the city center and mention the partners and participants in the project. Doesn’t hurt that it references the city’s new logo either.

La Paree’s coming down

This longtime downtown Birmingham sign will soon be going away. Harbert Realty Services announced this morning that they will be demolishing the former La Paree restaurant, located at 2013 5th Avenue North, to allow for more space in the planned 4-Diamond Marriott Renaissance Hotel. The $52 million luxury hotel will be contained in the former Regions Bank headquarters at the intersection of 5th Avenue North and 20th Street.

There may be a few folks that are wondering where their downtown FedEx Kinko’s store is? Well, it’s just opened this morning at 312 20th Street North in Birmingham’s city center. For those new to the situation, they were the last tenants on the block that’s been slated for redevelopment by Corporate Realty as apartments.

Their former neighbors have all found new locations in the greater downtown area as well, including Reed Books on 2nd Avenue North, Scott’s Koneys (now on 21st Street South). And yes, we’d argue that the new payment center for the Birmingham Water Works on 1st Avenue North is at least pretty close to downtown (it’s even got drive-thru lanes).

BB&T’s coming to metro Birmingham

BB&T logo and slogan

The Winston-Salem Journal is reporting that BB&T apparently feels like the opportunity is here. They’ve filed papers with the FDIC to open a location in Birmingham, AL. It would be the third location in the state and the first for the Magic City.

The branch won’t have drive-thru lanes  – cool, though it makes you wonder just where they will put this new “boutique” bank branch…
