Sharrif Simmons Benefit, The Nick

The latest benefit performance for spoken word performer Sharrif Simmons is set for The Nick. The lineup includes The Sharrif Simmons Experience, RTist With Green Seed, Phillip, Drew, & Eric Of Caddle Acoustic & Special Guests! Cost for the show will be $10.

According to the MySpace profile set up to assist in fundraising efforts, Simmons has recently suffered some setbacks involving recovery from his May 10 attack. This and other performances whether they are here or in Brooklyn can do nothing but help.

Birmingham awarded Preserve America Grant for Ensley

Representatives from the City of Birmingham and Main Street Birmingham were in Washington, DC earlier today to formally receive a Preserve America grant as part of ceremonies recognizing all first round recipients at a 9 a.m. ceremony in the Cannon House office building. This is the first Preserve America grant that has been awarded to The Magic City.

Don’t forget about Rod

With all of the attention being focused on the recent changes in the news department of NBC13, including the sudden departure of Fran Curry and the return of Andrea Linderberg to the airwaves, its easy to forget that former NBC13 reporter Rod Carter is coming back from Tampa. MyUrbanReport talked to Carter about his return to Birmingham, effective July 23.

Preserving The Storyteller

Some may have been wondering why Frank Fleming’s The Storyteller has been surrounded by chain link fencing in recent days. Well, the 20+ bronze sculptures located in Five Points South are the subject of a conservation project undertaken by the Birmingham Museum of Art.

Shelley Paine of Nashville, TN and Jackie and Cameron Wilson (of Wilson Conservation, New York, NY) are cleaning and applying new patinas and hot and cold waxes to the sculptures to seal and protect the patina. Work on the sculpture is scheduled to be completed this Saturday, July 14

The conservators have special training in art history, object conservation and chemistry. So it looks like at least in this case the city had a reason to repaint the fountain portion of the sculpture, despite comments against

The Ronald McDonald House of Central Alabama will be holding this fundraiser on July 17, beginning at 6p.m. at B&A Warehouse. The buy-in is $60 and it gives you the chance to win several prizes including

Obama excites crowd at Sheraton

As we reported last month, presidential hopeful and current U.S. senator from Illinois Barack Obama made his first appearance of the 2008 campaign season in the Magic City this evening.  Approximately 2,000 people paid $25 each for the opportunity to see Obamaat an event at the Sheraton Birmingham downtown. They also heard comments from U.S. Representative Artur Davis and former NBA basketball player Charles Barkley.
