A new image campaign was unveiled at this morning’s Five Points South merchants group meeting. Brian Kurlander of Slaughter Group (pictured above) presented the design to those in attendance, the result of nearly a year of focus groups and small committee work.

The return of the Magic City MySpace Directory

It took a lot longer to reconstruct than we first thought, but we can now finally say that the Magic City MySpace Directory is back up and running. It’s the first such directory for an individual city or metropolitan area and we know that we don’t have everybody.

Abortion rights demonstrations to continue all week

Those that believed that the demonstrations over the weekend were all were mistaken.

Birmingham Weekly’s Mixed Media has the activities organized by the Greater Birmingham Chapter of the National Organization of Women (NOW) for the week.

Their events provide an alternative to ones organized for the week by Operation Save America’s (formerly Operation Rescue) and listed on this site set up specifically for the week.

Babywearing growing in metro Birmingham

The amount of new parents that are turning to "babywearing" is incredible. Our local resident experts in the field, the Magic City Slingers, have reason to enjoy this Friday the 13th as their new business cards have arrived.

Birmingham’s chapter (Alabama’s first incidentally) of Nine In, Nine Out, the national babywearing organization, says that it purpose is to bring together experienced “babywearers” and people who would like help choosing and using a baby carrier. They call it a “fellowship of the sling.” You may want to check out the nonprofit’s site to learn more about who founded the group and how it is helping newborns and parents.

Green signs looking out at me with a name change at Harbert Plaza

Covered AmSouth-Regions signThe AmSouth to Regions conversion was visually completed this morning with area banking centers switching from the familiar blue and white to the new Regions green. As we reported in May, the complete changeover should be complete by October.

The name change affects not only the banking centers, but also civic centers named for the now absorbed AmSouth. Harbert Realty Services announced today that Harbert Plaza would officially change its name to Regions Harbert Plaza to coincide with the merger. Continue reading

Team IMPACT Informational Session, B & A Warehouse

Team IMPACT (Individuals Motivated by Progress, Action, Commitment and Time) is a new group that will serve as an extension of the area Easter Seals organization’s board of directors, while focusing on volunteerism. They are seeking young professionals interested in making a difference in the lives of children and adults with disabilities.

This event will be a time to learn more about the group while it is still in its formative stages. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served to those in attendance.

While you don’t have to, they’d prefer it if you’d RSVP for the event (call Paige Jordan at 314.2188).

Phoenix Club Summer Social, Jackson’s Bar & Bistro

The Phoenix Club of Birmingham is a young professional organization aimed consisting of young men between the ages of 25-35 dedicated to raising money for the Boys & Girls Club of Central Alabama through quarterly fund raising events.This summer social is an opportunity to mix and mingle with members and potential members while checking out the SoHo Square development in downtown Homewood. There will be 2 for 1 beer specials and food will be provided.
