Two chances to vote for local projects online, and a reminder

Of course, we’ll do the reminder first – if you haven’t yet, go over to http://www.winanmri.com, look up Cooper Green Mercy Hospital, watch the video (and laugh!) and then vote to help them win an MRI machine that they desperately need. And then follow that routine every day through New Year’s Eve. Now for the other two voting opportunities:

First, you’ll want to head on over to How to Split an Atom and vote for realtorclix.com, a website designed by a local web company named Slamwire. They’re up for an Open Web Award in the niche social networks category .

Then you’ll want to head on over to LunarPages to cast a vote for our own Nicki Faulk’s WordPress template design. It’s pretty cool considering the time of year and all. You can even see the theme in action if you click on the image of it over on the LunarPages post (or you’ve already figured out that you can get to it from here too). You’ve gt until Sunday to vote in this one.

Magic City Question: Where should it go?

That’s the $19 million/year question right now… it appears that while a feasibility study is taking place right now, that there may not be a clear cut decision about where the dome/multipurpose facility will be placed.

The mayor appears to be supporting a location near the Birmingham Race Course, while placement downtown in conjunction with many other proposed projects would be more in line with recommendations made in the City Center master plan.

Got comments; good, that’s why we’ve got today’s Magic City Question

Birmingham City Council passes minority inclusion ordinance

The Birmingham City Council on Tuesday unanimously passed an ordinance that makes minority inclusion a necessary part of every municipal request for proposals and all city-awarded contracts.

City Councilor Steven Hoyt, who has made minority inclusion his political platform, amended the proposed ordinance on Tuesday’s agenda to remove language “encouraging a minimum of 27 percent minority business participation.” That percentage would have invited lawsuits that, in the past decade, have successfully overturned so-called minority set-asides; high courts have generally ruled them unconstitutional.

Learn more about Birmingham’s Green Dreams

We now know why contributor (and Terminal logo artist) Charles Buchanan hasn’t had time to post to the site recently…

It’s because of an excellent article in UAB Magazine’s Fall 2007 issue about our city’s renewed interest in completing the Olmstead Brothers’ park plan, specifically the city’s Park-nership project focusing on Railroad Reservation Park, Red Mountain Park and Ruffner Mountain Nature Center.

It’s also a great time to focus on this piece as our City Council will vote to formally enter into a management agreement with the Friends of the Railroad District to manage Railroad Reservation Park during their regularly scheduled meeting this morning (items 11 & 15 on the council agenda – PDF).

If you haven’t already completed writing Christmas cards to that long list of friends around the country, and you still need a few more, The Greater Birmingham Humane Society may be just the place for you.

You’ve got until this Saturday, December 15, to head on over to their website or visit their offices on Snow Drive to have them send Christmas cards on your behalf. You may also visit their offices and purchase cards for $1/each; just contact them to let them know how many you might need.

They also have ornaments available at their gift shop and at Generation Dog in Homewood for $10/each. It’s a great way to support a good cause.
