Random Shots: The sale begins

Belk Downtown

A little blurry, this is the scene from the downtown Birmingham Belk this morning as more than 90 people stood in line waiting for the beginning of the “official” grand opening sale today for all area stores. The name change officially occurred on September 2. However, as we reported last month, the Parisian name lives on in metro Detroit.

Round 1 goes to the protesters; is it right?

By now you should know that the City Council voted unanimously to revoke the business & liquor licenses of a gas station owner on the city’s East side. The decision has led to some interesting commentary over on the Birmingham News’ breaking news blog. So after you’ve finished looking at the story that was filed and the 20+ comments (there are more listed but some are repeats), let’s hear what you think about it.

NOTE: It’s interesting to note that the decision from the courts on the case has not been made yet.

Random Shots: It’s almost time over at Eastwood

Sign At Eastwood Village

Workers work to finish installing a sign for one of the new businesses opening up on the former site of Eastwood Mall. A quick look around the new shopping center, known as Eastwood Village, lets you know that plans are for the property to become fully operational in the near future. Stores moving into the development include rue 21, Shoe Carnival, Starbucks Coffee, Old Navy and Salsarita’s. Oh yeah, and Wal-Mart.

Election ’07: It’s getting there

We’re slowly adding features to the Election ’07 site. We’ve actually started using the blog this morning, asking what should be the most important question about the race:

Just what are the issues?

Yesterday we learned that William Bell and Ray Brooks will also be participating in our online forum, joining those that we announced yesterday.

Finally, later this morning we’ll also be adding an Election ’07 calendar to the site’s sidebar that will list upcoming candidate events. We only have two to start the list, so if you’re a candidate you may just want to send your schedule in to us so we can share it with everybody else.

Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, various locations

Ah, fall is in the air. After weeks of brutal heat, it’s time to . . . stay inside and watch movies during the 9th annual Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival. The festival kicks off Friday, Sept. 28, with a screening of “The Ten,” a comedy loosely based on the Ten Commandments starring a bunch of big names including Winona Ryder, Adam Brody, Jessica Alba. Saturday and Sunday you can get your fill of features, shorts, documentaries, animation — there’s something for everyone. Read all about the 2007 film lineup here. It’s not just all movies though. In-between screenings enjoy food, music and panel discussions. New this year, Sidewalk has partnered with the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to highlight civil and human rights-related films.

Cost: Opening night tickets are $10 in advance/$13 at the door. Weekend passes (Saturday and Sunday) are $25 in advance/$30 at the door. Sidewalk members and students with valid ID enjoy ticket discounts. Single film tickets (Saturday and Sunday) are $7 each or $17 for a 3-pack. For the somebodies that want to be Somebody, you can score an all-access pass to every party and screening for $200.
