Your city center economic development organization now has a brand new online home. The folks at Operation New Birmingham been working on the new site for several months now, with the formal unveiling scheduled to take place later this month. Head on over and check it out.
We’re particularly happy because of a certain hub for information being included in their “In the News” section.

It’s a pretty good deal if you ask me. The folks at Mayfield Ice Cream had spelt spell it out in this blog post on their website (currently cached by Google). They figured that since you can’t throw candy from the floats during the annual Magic City Classic parade, the next best thing would be to hand out free 4 oz. cups of vanilla ice cream.
The weird thing is that a current search of the company’s new blog shows no sign of this post existing. NOTE: Here is the link to the new version of the post, made at 3:43 p.m. local time on October 15. The post has also shown shows a lot of love to the Magic City Classic itself, scheduled to take place next week Saturday, October 27 at historic Legion Field between Alabama A&M and Alabama State.
For those not familiar with the Magic City Classic… well, you’ve just got to see it for yourselves, an experience that can’t be missed. Click here to view their offficial site and here to find out where you need to be standing if they do in fact go ahead with for the free ice cream plan.

Wouldn’t it be great if we had some sort of rapid transit connecting the BJCC/downtown with UAB/Five Points South? It’s actually in the works, and you have a chance to be part of the planning process this coming week.
According to this article by Eddie Lard on al.com, the In-Town Transit Partnership Project has been planning this since 2005. Buses have been brought in for demonstration purposes, including the one pictured above that visited the city last November.
Currently the idea is to have free buses (larger ones than usual) running up and down a dedicated lane on 18th Street, with 10 bus stations along the way at spots including the Railroad Reservation Park and Central Station. The concept here is that transit attracts people, which means foot traffic, which means development–stores, restaurants, condos, offices, etc.

Harbert Realty Services and Concord Hospitality announced earlier this morning that Birmingham’s new Marriott Renaissance Hotel (being built in the City Center at 5th Avenue North and 20th Street) will also be home to a brand-new Starbucks Coffee location.
The Starbucks store will be a convenience for hotel guests and surrounding businesses. It will be interesting to see how their arrival, though still some time off, will affect the business of our current crop of downtown coffeehouses, most notably Java and Jams, who only recently opened in June.
The downtown area’s newest coffeehouse is located one block south of the proposed Starbucks location, which would be the 20th in the metropolitan area based on current numbers and the 5th for Birmingham city center area.
