It’s Spring Break for most area schools and the liturgical calendar puts us in Holy Week leading up to Easter. This combination has lots of folks out of town. Those of us left, fear not. Thanks to Birmingham’s cultural scene, there is more than just egg hunts to occupy our time.
Friday night, Barbie’s got a brand new bag … and look … and view of herself. You can find the exhibit “Liberating Barbie” at What’s on 2nd? which is conveniently located on 2nd Avenue North in downtown Birmingham. Students in a “Barbie” course at UAB and Birmingham artists have modified Barbies to “tell a story about the ways in which they have not lived up to the appearance, presentation of self and status gender norms.” In other words, that girl ain’t right. Proceeds of the annual auction support Women’s Studies scholarships. The reception is from 5-9 p.m. The event is free but it’s more fun if you bid.
If Saturday has you scrambling for something to do, why not go to a Sidewalk Scramble? (Puns, I love ’em) Basic idea is teams show up, get loose guidelines and then have just 48 hours to write, cast, film and edit a short. This Scramble each film had to have the words, “we’ll sleep when we’re dead,” somewhere in the script along with a few other things. Saturday night at 7 you can see what ideas the 23 teams came up with at the Carver Theatre. Tickets are $8 ($7 for members/students). The Carver will have their bar/refreshment stand open but be sure to bring some cash with you.
Sunday is a pretty big day in the Christian calendar. If you are so inclined it’s already on your calendar to head to your favorite house of worship. And like me, you’ll probably follow that up with a big meal with the family. If it’s just another Sunday to you, I hope that you take the day easy … do something you enjoy. Make the last day of Spring Break last as long as possible.
