UPDATE: City Stages 21 makes NY Times list

UPDATE: 5.12 – …and now, the festival’s unveiled their new calendar. More on Timetable.

The first act hasn’t even taken the stage for this summer’s edition of City Stages and it’s already being talked about in The New York Times. Birmingham’s annual summer music festival was the only one from the state of Alabama inclueded in paper’s list of pop music festivals taking place this summer (called appropriately enough, Summer Stages). The list appeared in Sunday’s paper and is the second time in two months that The Magic City makes an appearance on the pages of the paper.

It also helps out that since the list is alphabetical, it’s the first one…

More lists, always with the lists

The latest list to appear comes from Birmingham, AL based Southern Living. Readers will be able to check out the list of the best places in the South in the January issue – or there is another option.

Jackie Hutcherson over at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch decided to review and share the lists over on Hit the Road, Jack. While we didn’t make the best city list (and FYI – Charleston got top honors there), Homewood made the list of best neighborhoods to shop. Highlands Bar and Grill and the Birmingham Botanical Gardens made lists too; you should hop on over and see which ones.

A new ‘Cities’ list, an interesting result

Women’s Health Magazine recently unveiled its list of the Best and Worst Cities for Women. While Birmingham was ranked near the bottom of the list overall (92 out of 100), it did get recognized as being the best city with the most OG-BYNs.

Check out where other cities landed on the list as well as in specific categories.

Tracking the change, Weekly style

We didn’t cover this year’s Presidential election – well, at least not the stretch run – but Birmingham Weekly did. Now the Weekly’s own Matt Hooper’s keeping track of the appointments to President-elect Barack Obama’s cabinet and his senior aides over on Mixed Media. That is, if you don’t feel like visiting the official transition website.

More airport traffic? Maybe, but for the wrong reasons…

I got an email today from the chairman of the Business Travel Coalition directing me to the Save my Airport! website they’ve established to raise awareness about the potential of an airline crisis due to rising fuel prices. The consumer advocacy group has compiled two lists on the site highlighting airports that may lead to a reduction or suspension of service. Interestingly, most of our major large city and regional airports made the list. That would include ours (currently in the news for a completely unrelated reason) and Huntsville‘s.

Dothan and Mobile and Montgomery are the ones included on the regional airport list. Reduction in service from these cities may boost our numbers here, but for the wrong reasons. If you feel compelled to voice your concern to the appropriate elected officials, they’ve made it easy to do that as well – just enter your zip code on this page to get started.
