Odetta dies

The Voice of the Civil Rights Era, Odetta Gordon, will not get the chance to perform at President-elect Barack Obama’s Inauguration as she and others had hoped. The Birmingham, AL born singer/songwriter passed away last night at the age of 77, a result of heart disease according to her agent and numerous reports, including this one at nytimes.com (subscription may be required). They also have an extended Last Word interview with the folk music icon currently available on their website.

The doctor is in (Fast Company)

Dr. James Andrews is likely one Birmingham’s best known surgeons, especially to the professional athletes and wrestlers that visit the city seeking his opinion on their latest injury. The good doctor is the focus of an article in the upcoming September issue of the magazine Fast Company (#128 for those of you keeping track at home).

While they haven’t changed the website to reflect the issue that started arriving in mailboxes yesterday (it starts on page 104 if you’ve already received it), when they do, be prepared to check out the list of 78 of the athletes that have paid a visit to The Magic City for his services. Of course, you can always read the bio on his practice’s site too.
