Yesterday statewide nonprofit organization Empower Alabama announced that it would be closing its doors at the end of the month via email. Local progressive blog FreeThinkBham shared the news with folks in metro Birmingham via the posting of the email sent by the organization‘s executive director, Bradley Davidson. According to the note, many of its supporters have already created a political action committee, Front Door Democracy PAC, to focus on the 2010 general election.

Kids Got The Vote kicks off tonight
If you’ve got a chance, you may want to stop on by WorkPlay tonight starting at 8 p.m. and learn more about plans to register young people to vote in advance of the November elections. Empower Alabama is partnering with Catalyst for Birmingham and Greater Birmingham Ministries in this effort which will include shows at WorkPlay and The Bottletree. Tonight’s event will feature catering by local restaurants and entertainment by DJs Nastique and Charles III and the All That Fuss dancers.
Coincidentally, this morning’s Birmingham News reported an increase in the number of African American voters registered in a front page story, pointing to Barack Obama’s bid for president. It’ll be interesting to see how many people are registered overall by November 4, 2008.
