Free the Hops bill before State Senate tomorrow

UPDATE: 5.14.2009 – This afternoon, the Alabama State Senate passed HB 373 – The Free the Hops bill. Click here for more info.

The folks at Free the Hops justĀ sent a Tweet out a little while ago that will have many in Birmingham and Alabama sitting on the edge of their seats tomorrow. Alabama State Senate Bill No. 132 will be on the calendar for a vote tomorrow. A similar bill, which would raise the alcohol limit to 13.9% passed the Alabama House of Representatives late last week.

The fact that the vote is coming up tomorrow allows us to tout a rather cool feature on the Free the Hops website that allows you to find out who your elected officials are in Montgomery. We’ll keep an eye on their Twitter account tomorrow to see what happens…

New Good People brew debuts at Harvest Brew

The post title pretty much tells the story. 9 Numbers is reporting that Good People Brewing Company will be introducing an Oatmeal Stout tomorrow evening at Homewood’s Harvest Brew event. Tria Market’s blog has all of the pertinent information on this Oktoberfest celebration beginning at 5 p.m.According to the 9 Numbers post, it’s a limited release, so if you don’t get it tomorrow, you’ll want to get on over to the J. Clyde and Five Points Grill next week.

While we’re at it, the folks at Good People are asking folks to become fans of their page on Facebook instead of becoming friends with their profile.

I’m heading to my Friday morning meeting with Whitney and I noticed an interesting site:

After checking with the crew, they confirmed my worst fears. It seems that the New Vulcan Ale House won’t be opening after all. No official word on what actually happened though we’re sure that folks around town will be quite upset by this development. You may want to check out their MySpace profile for more information.

Free the Hops boycotting Birmingham Budweiser

Of the world’s Top 100 beers, only two are available here. Alabama has some of the most restrictive liquor laws in the nation still on the books years after Prohibition. Free the Hops (FTH) is a grassroots, citizen-driven organization trying to change that. For the second legislative session, the group will try to get state lawmakers to literally free the hops by increasing the limit on alcohol content allowed in beer. But first they have to battle with Birmingham Budweiser.

Free the Hops logoFTH has asked its members and supporters to join a formal boycott of Birmingham Budweiser products. In an e-mail sent late Tuesday night, new FTH president Stuart Carter says the leadership at the local beer distributor is “still working against the interests of both Anheuser Busch (who, in addition to Bud, brews dozens of beers that are currently illegal under Alabama law) and Alabama consumers. They have indicated that they will again work to prevent our bill, freeing the hops, from passing in the Alabama state legislature.”
