More places to find it fresh

Back in May Christina gave us a few options for finding fresh produce in the Magic City. Well, you can add at least three more options to that list. The Park Place Farmer’s Market started up its third season last Wednesday in Linn Park; they’ll keep on going until August 27 from 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Jones Valley Urban Farm logoThe folks over at Jones Valley Urban Farm invite you over to the Gardens of Park Place to pick up produce between 4 – 6 p.m. at their after-work farm stand. It’s available Monday – Thursday through August and Tuesdays only from September to April.

Those living on the city’s East side can head over to the South East Lake Farmers Market at 78th Street and 2nd Avenue South every Saturday through October 25 for fresh produce.

Making 20th Street uniform

Those that were in downtown Birmingham last week may have noticed city crews working around traffic lights and light poles, particularly along 20th Street North. Well, a closer look at this picture shows that the city employee is spray painting the traffic signal casing black. Poles and pedestrian crossing signals were also painted black as bright red banners were hung with the city’s new logo.

Renovations and continue on the old Federal Reserve Building at the corner of 5th Avenue and 18th Street North by Melaver, Inc. of Savannah, GA. According to the developer’s, website,

“…the Federal Reserve Building’s historic façade will be restored, and Melaver has committed to seeking LEED-NC Silver certification, assuring tenants of the most modern, efficient, technologically advanced and productive workspace available in the Birmingham MSA.”

The building will house a hotel, restaurant, convention, retail and office space.

Catalyst returns to action tonight

New Catalyst for Birmingham logoIt’s not like our hip to be civic friends ever really left; they’ve just been quietly preparing for this relaunch. Tonight you can join them over at The Wine Loft in the city center and find out what plans are for the future. It’s also a great excuse to enjoy a wine-tasting (and some pretty nice weather).

Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex employee Darrell Alldredge puts a  final coat of paint on the goal post Wednesday morning in preparation for this weekend’s NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament Regional. They’ve been working on improvements to the facility since January in preparation for this weekend’s action.

First round games start Friday at 12:15 p.m. with Tennessee (29-4) vs. American (22-11), then 30 minutes later, Butler (29-3) vs. South Alabama (26-6). At 7:10 p.m. ?Oklahoma (22-11) vs. Saint Joseph’s (21-12), and 30 minutes after the end of that game, Louisville (24-8) vs. Boise State (26-6).

Single game tickets go on sale this morning and you’ve still got time to fill out your brackets – at least until 10:55 p.m. (and that’s if you’re playing along with the NCAA).

We’d hoped to get this up yesterday, but the fun thing about technology is that sometimes it chooses not to work. The Bomb Shelter generously lent us some of the furniture that we used for our anniversary party on Friday. We’d like to make sure that as many people as possible know about (and go to) tonight’s send-off for the local music venue…

Random Shots: A reminder of what’s to come

One of two banners hanging on a downtown Birmingham, AL skyscraper that formerly served as headquarters for Regions Bank. It is slated to be transformed into the second Marriott Renaissance Hotel in the metropolitan area.

This is one of two banners that are hanging on the corner of the former Regions Bank headquarters in downtown Birmingham that were installed earlier this week. The signs announce the pending arrival of a Renaissance Hotel in the city center and mention the partners and participants in the project. Doesn’t hurt that it references the city’s new logo either.
