The Inequality of Equality lecture, BCRI

The second Women’s History Month program scheduled at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute this month is titled “The Inequality of Equality: the Role of Women in Mass Movements.”

Guest speakers include former BCRI intern Tara White, who is currently a lecturer of history at the Cooperstown Graduate Program at State University of New York at Oneonta, and Michele Wilson, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology and director of the Women’s Studies Program at UAB.

White will discuss black women’s activism over time, focusing on Birmingham before, during and after the Civil Rights era. Wilson will speak further of women’s involvement in post-Civil Rights Movements and the significance of gender differences in leadership.

This program starts at 6 p.m. in the Rev. Abraham L. Woods Jr. Community Meeting Room. The BCRI is located downtown at 520 16th St. North. For more information, call 328-9696, ext. 244.

15th Annual Women of Distinction Luncheon, The Harbert Center

The Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama will honor 12 outstanding women at their 15th Annual Women of Distinction Luncheon Friday at The Harbert Center. The program pays tribute to women who have made special contributions to their community through civic, academic or professional involvement.

This year’s Women of Distinction are: Dr. Leah Rawls Atkins, director emerita, Center for Arts and Humanities Auburn University; Dr. Marquita Furness Davis, director, Office of School Readiness, State of Alabama; Gwen Deierhoi, Girl Scout and community volunteer; Gloria J. Alexander Dennard, director of Library Media Services, Jefferson County Board of Education; Beth Franklin, executive director, Hand In Paw; Fran Godchaux, senior vice president, Operation New Birmingham; Anne G. Miller, founder and executive director, Alabama Wildlife Center; Teresa Zuniga Odom, multicultural markets coordinator, Alabama Power Co.; Joan Perry, vice president, PHP Communications; Carol H. Steckel, commissioner, Alabama Medicaid Agency; and Nancy H. Wagnon, founder and president, Wagnon & Associates.

In addition, Peggie Myles, past board president of the Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama, will be honored with the Mildred Bell Johnson Award, the Council’s highest adult honor. The award is given annually to a woman who has a prior affiliation with Girl Scouting and has made a lifelong contribution to her community by distinguishing herself through professional, community or humanitarian efforts.

Also at the luncheon, 17 Senior Girl Scouts will be honored for earning their Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. These young ladies from around the community will be recognized for their leadership and service projects. The Gold Award requires over 65 hours of planning, community service, and evaluations.

The Women Gather: An Evening of Poetry and Music, BCRI

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute will pay tribute to women of strength, courage and excellence with “The Women Gather: An Evening of Poetry and Music” Thursday in the Rev. Abraham L. Woods Jr. Community Meeting Room.

The event, hosted by BCRI’s Vice President of Institutional Programs Priscilla Hancock Cooper, will feature Shirley Ferrill, Willandra Mahand, Sonovia Muhammad, Thelma Scott Nance, Laura Secord, La’Quita Singleton, LaShanna Price Tripp, Evelyn Dilworth-Williams and Asha Binta Xulu.

This is the first of two Women’s History Month presentations. The next one, “The Inequality of Equality: The Struggle of Women in Mass Movement,” is March 20 at the same time. The BCRI is located downtown at 520 16th St. North.

ShamRock, Sloss Furnaces

Sloss Furnaces is getting turned into a festive Irish venue on Saturday as they attempt to have the ultimate St. Patty’s Throwdown! ShamRock promises 10 bands for $10 = a low dough, family friendly event (though you’ve still got to be 21+ to drink).

Included in the admission price is Taste o’ Ireland for food lovers, various Feats o’ Strength and Big Glove Boxing for patrons to display their prowess and Beer Pong for those who enjoy a good game!

Family Fishing Rodeo, East Lake Park

11th Annual Birmingham Park and Recreation Family Fishing Rodeo is the largest community fishing event in the state of Alabama. Birmingham’s East Lake is stocked with tons of catfish and bass especially for this event.

10th Anniversary Open House Celebration, Jessie’s Place

Jessie’s Place, The Jimmie Hale Mission’s intermediate shelter for women and children, will be celebrating 10 years of faithful service with an open house celebration. This drop-in event is open to the public and does not cost anything to attend. Click on the link to read more about the important work the shelter is doing in our community.
