Random Shots: Soon we’ll be eating good in the neighborhood

Applebee’s in Five Points West

The Applebee’s restaurant that has long been promised in Birmingham’s Five Points West community nears completion. It will be the seventh  metro Birmingham location and only the second location west of I-65 and first in the city limits.

The restaurant is already poised to do great business, especially with the potential of an upgraded Birmingham International Raceway and the steady addition of new businesses on the city’s West side.

A popular pastime during the holidays is to go around town and look at how folks are decorating their homes. The Birmingham News ran a story on Sunday about just that, and have now posted a map showing locations suggested by their readers. If you’ve got any images of lights that you’d like to share with all of us from your travels, submit them to our Flickr Group or email them into photos@bhamterminal.com.

With the nation prepared to take a moment to remember those that perished on the day of infamy in 1941, those in Birmingham took a moment to remember those that suffered on 9/11. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum‘s traveling exhibit stopped in The Magic City on December 6. Here bagpipers play at the end of a mid-morning ceremony.

Some residents in Forest Park-South Avondale decided that they would ask Birmingham’s new mayor for a favor during the early days of his administration. The old Avonwood Cleaners building has sat vacant for years and has already suffered a fallen in roof and vandalism as mentioned in this story from August. This group simply wants the building taken down, though it the city did say in August that it may take as long as six months to clean up the property before demolition. They decided it was time to make sure that folks remembered that they wanted it down; so up went the sign on December 1…

Now if we could just get that old metal sign on the side of the building for our office…

The view inside of Urban Standard after its first Saturday morning rush. The business, located at 2320 2nd Avenue North, formally opened last week Friday to a steady stream of traffic… and its open for lunch today. It adds to our already diversifying mix of downtown gathering places, both planned and current.

Just a quick shot of a fall day earlier this month at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens‘ Japanese Garden.

We’d still rather have some rain though.
