The Southern Heritage Festival… in September?

That’s right; this year’s festival would be held on September 1 & 2. There has been a lot of chatter wondering if the event would be held this year. A resolution approving a contract with the Birmingham African American Arts and Heritage Foundation is included as a consent item on this morning’s City Council agenda (page 23, Item 9). If approved, the $35,000 contract would call for the Foundation to “produce and present the 2007 Southern Heritage Festival.”

There is no confirmation of an event location or lineup, though last year’s festival was held on the site of the Railroad Reservation Park in downtown Birmingham.

East Lake Farmers Market, East Lake United Methodist Church parking lot

For those who live in the city’s eastern section, you don’t necessarily have to go that far from home to find fresh local produce. The East Lake Farmers Market takes place every Saturday through the end of the growing season in the parking lot of the East Lake United Methodist Church (the corner of 78th Street & 2nd Avenue South) with live entertainment every week (rain or shine).

Sam Davidson’s in town tonight

Sam DavidsonSam Davidson is in town this evening at WorkPlay. According to the Remarkablog, he’ll be here in Birmingham beginning at 5 p.m. to meet and talk with folks (and hand out swag). Davidson is the president and co-founder of CoolPeopleCare and the creator of the Remarkablog. The blog focuses on telling stories about remarkable people, places and things. The site gives people great ideas to make a difference in five minutes or less everyday. They are one of the inspirations behind what we’d like to become here in the community: a way to find out what’s going on and how to do and not just say. We’re hoping that one or two of us will be able to show up later on in the evening.

We normally don’t just say “go,” but this is one you should consider.
