Election season is heating up

NOTE: Follow our election coverage at Election ’07!

A post on the Birmingham News’ breaking news blog this morning have some wondering if County Commissioner Larry Langford is planning a run for the mayor’s office here in town.

It’s already beginning to draw responses from the blogosphere as well. Time will reveal the true identities of those interested in running for office this fall.

The only candidate that has officially announced is Patrick Cooper, though there are reports that Valerie Abbott intends to announce her candidacy soon.

Library wins award for MySpace Page

BPL MySpace screenshotThe Birmingham Public Library has won an award for its creative use of its MySpace page for marketing their programs and features. The Be Innovative! Award from Innovative Interfaces, the company that markets the software used by the library to organize, order, process, and circulate all of its materials, is the second one presented to the library, the first being presented in 2004.

OrderCorner comes to Birmingham

ordercorner logoIf you’re not in the mood to cook a recipe you find on MyRecipes.com & bring it in for a business meeting (though you probably wouldn’t anyway), you can now call on OrderCorner to help you with your corporate catering needs. The Birmingham Business Journal posted the story about the business’ expansion into the Birmingham market this afternoon.

The Houston, TX based company also announced their expansion into the Charlotte, N.C. area today. It also has a significant presence in Austin & San Antonio, TX; Chicago, IL and New Jersey.

More want to CommuteSmart

Birmingham’s CommuteSmart program is starting to see business pick up because of the rising cost of gas.

Last week it announced that 20 businesses have recently signed on, agreeing to implement alternative transportation options. This list includes Alabama Power, Baptist Health System, Golden Flake Snacks and UAB.

The program’s website provides information about their offerings and reminds visitors of several facts, including some interesting facts about the organization. The program is a project of the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham. Continue reading

City Stages t-shirts on sale

Your chance to vote for your favorite t-shirt in City Stages ‘ annual contest (sponsored by Mountain High Outfitters ) ended last week.

The official designs are now available from the Mountain High website and at their Birmingham area locations . Four designs are available to choose from, with each available for purchase for $14.95. Weekend passes are also available for the annual event, scheduled for June 15 – 17. Check ’em out!

New life for News building?

This week’s issue of Birmingham Weekly should be hitting the street this morning (it’s already online) and it speaks of hope for those wanting to see the historic 1917 building that served as headquarters for The Birmingham News saved.

This news comes as the city prepares to honor preservation in the city. The Birmingham Historical Society presents their 2007 Preservation Awards this evening at the Young & Vann Building on 1st Avenue North. Continue reading

Birmingham Regional Chamber turns 120!

The Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce turned 120 years old on Monday, May 14. The Birmingham Business Journal ran a piece on their website talking about the accomplishments of one of, if not the oldest, organization of its kind in the region. It currently has more than 2,200 members across seven counties.
