“The Sign” now apparently has an online voice on Twitter

PepsiSignTwitterThe opinions about the soft drink advertising covering the electronic message board sitting atop Two North Twentieth in downtown Birmingham are varied, though now it appears it wants to speak for itself.

A Twitter account, @BhamPepsiSign, appears to have been created sometime yesterday for the controversial sign. The account’s bio states it’s “the official voice of the Birmingham Pepsi billboard.” There have been efforts since the sign’s installation started to catch the attention of Pepsi, and this may prove to be one of the more visible ways to do so.

The two-sided advertisement for Pepsi, paid for by local distributor Buffalo Rock, covers an electronic sign installed in 1971 to commemorate the city’s centennial atop the International style building. The sign’s installation is in advance of the sold-out March 28 preseason exhibition game between the Birmingham Barons and the Chicago White Sox. The Barons have the distinction of being the only team associated with the White Sox to not have a Pepsi corporate sponsorship. This includes the Charlotte  Knights, their Triple-A affiliate, whom set to open their new ballpark next month. They just signed a multi-year sponsorship and beverage-serving deal with Pepsi last month. It seems to correspond with our commentary on the sign from December 2012, though it could be coincidental.

In case you’re wondering, “The Sign” is currently following both Pepsi and Buffalo Rock; they aren’t following back – yet.

Meanwhile, Coca Cola United, the nation’s third largest bottler of Coke products,  is looking towards expansion, including a potentially significant one in Chattanooga.

Trim Tab Brewing Company hires Alabama’s first woman brewer

Wiersma up closeLauren Wiersma started this week as the newest member of the Trim Tab Brewing Company family. In the process, she also became the first female known to be working as a brewer at a brewery in Alabama. The brewery checked with the Pink Boots Society, an organization created to empower women beer professionals to advance their careers in the industry through education, and there’s no record of any others here, yet.

She’s not a stranger to metro Birmingham either, having spent most of her childhood here. She attended both Vestavia Hills High School and Birmingham Southern College.

Her path started simply enough. “I was in the wine business for a few years, and then I decided that I had some interest in brewing,” said Wiersma. She volunteered a couple of times at Avondale Brewing Company before heading out to Longmont, Colorado and an internship at Pumphouse Brewery. Once it was over She was offered a job in Longomont as she finished her three-weeks there by another brewery you may have heard of, Left Hand Brewing Company.

Wiersma said, “I basically asked my mom and sister if they’d pack up my things and send them to me ,and get rid of my apartment for me.”

She ended up spending two years out west. She was at Left Hand for just under a year doing packaging, spending the rest of that time at Oskar Blues as a cellar operator. According to her profile on their website, the position “handled everything from yeast care to dry hopping to filtering to cleaning tanks.”

Her journey back to Birmingham began due to some winter weather and a Facebook status update. Wiersma said, “One day I was having a very frustrating day with snow and ice up there. I got stuck in traffic for about two hours and made it fifteen miles and I finally turned around and put a rant up on Facebook about it and how I hated the snow and the cold.” Trim Tab’s brewmaster Will Crenshaw saw that status update and sent her a message saying that if she wanted to come back South, send him a resume. After talking to her fiancé, she decided to see where it led.

“That was on a Monday. Thursday, Harris emailed me and asked me if I’d be interested in doing an interview, Wiersma continues. “I told him I’d be in New Orleans that weekend, and he happened to be in New Orleans that weekend.” They met up, had a beer, and talked.

The following Tuesday morning, Wiersma said, “he and Will Facetimed with me. We chatted and they asked me some more questions. They called me back an hour later and offered me the job.”

wiersma portraitShe enjoyed her time in Colorado, but Wiersma missed her friends and family. “This is home to me,” she said. “I love Colorado. I loved being able to go hiking Rocky Mountain National Park whenever I wanted and all the outdoors stuff, I absolutely loved it. But this is home, and this is where my friends and family are.”

Wiersma is looking forward to helping to continue to shatter some perceptions of the industry. “It’s definitely one of those things depending on who you talk to. Some guys won’t take you seriously if you’re a female in the industry. Most of them are so accepting and wonderful and once they know you pull your weight and you know what you’re talking about, they’re like brothers. They’re great and you just kind of fit in and become one of the guys. I don’t think a lot of women see that aspect of it. Once you’re in there it’s awesome and it’s the most fun industry to be in.”

“I hope that I’m able to influence some women who are interested and hesitant of getting into the industry and it’s not as scary as it seems to be from the outside. I really would like to talk to any women who are interested and help them find ways to get in, find ways to encourage them.”

She’s also looking forward to the challenges ahead. “It’s neat to be able to come down into such a new brewing scene that I hope I can help guide.”

Lyric Hot Dogs & Birmingham Landmarks meet, release statement

11062013 Lyric September 2013The Terminal and other area news organizations received the joint statement early this afternoon via email. It’s the result of a meeting between Andrew Collins, owner of Lyric Hot Dogs, and Brant Breene, executive director of Birmingham Landmarks – the organization responsible for the operation of the Alabama Theatre and the restoration efforts underway at the Lyric Theatre (pictured to your left in September).

A copy of the statement has been uploaded as a PDF to our site.

The document states that while possible options were considered this morning, “code issues and other realities left the Lyric team with no choice for us to stay in our current location,” according to Collins. It went on to state he would focus on his new business, The Collins Bar (located in the former Metro Bistro location on 2nd Avenue North).

Most people learned of the plans for Lyric Hot Dogs to close in January after receiving a 90-day notice to vacate via status updates to Facebook late last week. A commentary was filed by John Archibald for al.com and The Birmingham News on Monday, with Weld for Birmingham publishing an expanded piece about the situation in their current issue. A statement has also been posted on the Lyric Theatre’s fan page on Facebook via their photo album courtesy of the board chairman, G. Daniel Evans, pertaining to comments made on the popular social network with regard to Birmingham Landmarks executive director Brant Breene.

Safari Cup faces a fight against Starbucks… in Chicago

It’s been a little more than three years since Safari Cup Coffee (somewhat) unexpectedly closed up shop at the corner of 21st St. (Richard Arrington, Jr. Blvd) and 3rd Ave. N. What some folks may not be aware of is that they simply moved the operation a few hours north to Chicago.

They opened in October of 2009 along the Southport corridor of the Windy City’s Lakeview neighborhood. A 2011 interview with the city’s RedEye has Dave McLaughlin saying the move was because he and wife “desired a more open-minded city and one that would embrace their African-only coffee.”

An email sent out over the weekend from “Andrew” via the site Change.org  directs people to sign an online petition asking Starbucks to not go through with plans to open a new location next door to the independent coffee shop. The email, however, asked for folks to “Save Birmingham’s Safari Cup coffeeshop.”

The news first broke in Chicago on November 16 via Facebook, with DNAInfo and the Patch site for Lakeview both writing about McLaughlin’s concerns and the fact that Starbucks hasn’t exactly done anything wrong.

A local blog, 900poundgorilla, maintained by W.C. Truck, has also been vocal about the impending Starbucks expansion. He’s gone so far as to write an open letter to Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz on his site inviting him on his radio show Sunday (yesterday) on WCPT-AM 820. We don’t know if Schultz accepted the invitation.

All Three area Rave theaters included in Carmike deal

Neon Rave. kejoli/Flickr.Don’t be surprised if you drive by the Rave Motion Pictures locations at Lee Branch, Patton Creek, and Vestavia City Center in early 2013 and you see another logo on them instead.

Those three theater complexes are being included in a deal that sees sixteen locations across seven states being sold to Carmike Cinemas. The purchase was announced earlier today is expected to be closed by the end of the calendar year.

The acquisition effectively removes Rave, a theater chain founded in 1999 and in Birmingham since late 2002, from the state of Alabama (save for the one location still operating in Montgomery). As the Birmingham Business Journal reported earlier today, the press release states the purchase price includes both cash and assumed lease obligations.

The merger also provides for an expansion of Carmike’s presence in the area (doubling the number of locations in the metro area) while making it possible for them to inherit one of the region’s IMAX screens (operating since 2010) and three facilities that feature all-digital projectors.

Unless it’s marking the beginning of the end of Rave as we know it, they should still be around for a while; they’ll still be operating 46 theaters after the deal’s closed.

Construction of new Walgreens on Clairmont progresses

Walgreens under constructionConstruction of the new Walgreens location on Clairmont Avenue seems to be moving along smoothly – today’s sudden downpour notwithstanding.

The 13,000 square foot building looks like it’ll be ready to open late this year, its location the result of efforts to spare the historic fire station it now sits across the parking lot from that houses Bogue’s. As mentioned on this site last year, the agreement that served as the basis for the resulting project isn’t exactly being seen as binding anymore.

The drugstore chain’s practice in recent history of taking over former Borders locations and converting them into spaces similar to their flagship store in downtown Chicago might have one wondering if we’ll see any of those innovations in this new location, including the new “Well Experience Format” they’re beginning to roll out across the country.  They’ve also been looked to as a national chain attempting to tackle food desert issues, but its close proximity to a Piggly Wiggly would make that less important here.

The parent company has been busy too – naming a former McDonald’s CEO its new non-executive chairman and investing in European chain Alliance Boots, setting the stage for a full merger in as little as three years.

Incidentally, the Facebook group that was originally created to help lead to how this new Walgreens location was developed re-branded itself just this morning to focus on a new effort, to Save Birmingham’s Schools from their Board.
