State tax holiday, part deux

The state’s Department of Revenue recently announced that we’d be enjoying our second sales tax holiday on August 3 – 5. According to their website, the holiday provides shoppers "the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers, and clothing free of state sales or use tax." It also means that you can get that MacBook Pro you’ve been eyeing in Jefferson County and only pay 1% in taxes (for education).

Here’s the list of cities and counties that are participating this year (note that as of yesterday the city of Birmingham had not officially decided if they would participate, though they did last year). The list will be updated as more governments let the state know of their decisions.

FYI – Java and Jams opens

Java and Jams opened their doors on Thursday evening, in time to take advantage of those attending City Stages this weekend.

The coffeehouse, located at 321 20th Street North, is a free WiFi hotspot, which makes it one of more than 340 hotspots in the Birmingham metro area. The owners plan to serve as a live music venue as well as a place for local artists to display their works. Continue reading

Keep an eye out for counterfeit checks

While this may not affect many people, it will affect some in the area. A special alert has been sent out by the people over at the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) stating that counterfeit official checks bearing the First American Bank name are currently in circulation. #1 for long term economic growth

Birmingham, Alabama has been ranked as the #1 city for economic vitality out of the top 100 metropolitan areas. Those are the findings from a recent BizJournals survey that reviewed the per capita income for those areas over the last 25 years. The report was published online on Tuesday.

The study shows that the city’s active diversification of its industry during the 25-year period aided greatly in achieving the improved results. The site provides links to the methodology used as well as the rankings of the other 99 metro areas.
