Gimme Shelter: Barkitecture Charity Auction, B&A Warehouse

The Barkitecture tour concludes at B&A Warehouse, where attendees can bid on some incredible doghouses as well as some items for our other four-legged friends.

The event starts at 7 p.m. and features live & silent auctions, live entertainment by Nashville’s Webb Wilder, food, drinks and fun.
The winning doghouse design will be featured in both the Southern Living House Plans Magazine and website along with a profile of the architect who designed and built the doghouse.

The American Institute of Architects Birmingham Chapter (AIA) and The Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) collaborated to bring "Gimme Shelter: Barkitecture Tour & Charity Auction" to life.

Tickets cost $75 and $125 and are available from GBHS (click here to purchase).

Would Gehry’s work be welcome in the Magic City?

The Tuscaloosa News’ Tommy Stevenson ponders this question for us in a post on his blog. The idea of prolific yet controversial architect Frank Gehry producing work in the Magic City is definitely a question worth pondering. Continue reading

YP Expo tomorrow night!

YP expoThis weekend will already be crazy with people racing to the courthouse and enjoying their art on the rocks.

20+ organizations are hoping that you’ll come out and learn more about them to start it off right at the YP Expo while checking out one of the newest renovations in the city center.

In the process, it’s also hoped that those in attendance will get to learn more about how many others are just like them, young, active and ready to make a positive change in our community. Continue reading

YP Expo @ Innovation Depot

More than 20 organizations are taking part in the first ever YP expo (webpage for event), an opportunity for our region’s young professional community to find out all of the different ways to get involved in our community. It also provides an opportunity for people to see the amount that these individuals care about making their city better than ever. The new event will take place in the city’s new Innovation Depot, the former Sears building. Music for the evening will be provided by The Spots.

It’s free to attend, but so they have an idea of how many to expect, RSVP to http://www.evite.com/app/publicUrl/alison516@aol.com/YPExpo or send an e-mail to Alison Howell of the Regional Chamber of Commerce. It’s a great way to start what promises to be a busy weekend.

State tax holiday, part deux

The state’s Department of Revenue recently announced that we’d be enjoying our second sales tax holiday on August 3 – 5. According to their website, the holiday provides shoppers "the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers, and clothing free of state sales or use tax." It also means that you can get that MacBook Pro you’ve been eyeing in Jefferson County and only pay 1% in taxes (for education).

Here’s the list of cities and counties that are participating this year (note that as of yesterday the city of Birmingham had not officially decided if they would participate, though they did last year). The list will be updated as more governments let the state know of their decisions.

Mr. Obama comes to Birmingham (next month)

Campaign for Change has been busy today posting Myspace bulletins announcing the pending arrival of 2008 presidential hopeful Barack Obama in Birmingham, Alabama.

He will be making his first visit of the campaign season to the Magic City on July 9, speaking to an audience at the Sheraton Birmingham downtown. He’ll be the latest in the string of presidential hopefuls coming to garner support of party locals. Just last week, Sen. John McCain decided to come into town the Friday night of City Stages.
