The Birmingham News is reporting that Mona the elephant, a longtime resident at the Birmingham Zoo, was euthanized this morning.
She was believed to be at least 56 years old and had been having problems standing in her exhibit space recent days.
Susie, her longtime companion, died in January 2005.

Jestina Howard has been named one of Ebony Magazine’s 2007 Bachelorettes. She is one of 19 chosen to make the list that’s been published in the July 2007 issue, available now on newsstands. As mentioned in this week’s Birmingham Times article, she is the only person chosen from Birmingham, Alabama on the list. Ruben Studdard made the bachelors list in the June issue.
Howard is the owner of Aware Cosmetics and is quite active in the city, including serving on the board of Catalyst.
