The "Mighty Wurlitzer" will be played from 7 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. during the evening performance and from 1:30 p.m. – 2 p.m. before the Sunday matinee screenings. Doors will open one (1) hour and classic cartoons will be shown before each film.

Mona is euthanized

Mona the elephantThe Birmingham News is reporting that Mona the elephant, a longtime resident at the Birmingham Zoo, was euthanized this morning.

She was believed to be at least 56 years old and had been having problems standing in her exhibit space recent days.

Susie, her longtime companion, died in January 2005.

Outback Steakhouse Magic City 7s Rugby Tournament, Regions Park

The Birmingham Vulcans Rugby Club hosts their 24th annual 7s tournament at Regions Park, (formerly known as the Hoover Met). Play will begin at 9 a.m. and end sometime around 3 p.m. Admission is free for spectators. Teams can register for $200 using Paypal.

Artwalk Brewhaha, Starbucks (Five Points South)

This Saturday, June 23, Starbucks in Southside will host Birmingham photographer Lane Finch and a special reading by THE2NDHAND.as part of the July ArtWalk Brewhaha.

Join them upstairs in the Five Points South Starbucks at 7 p.m. for an art-filled evening.

Finch’s photography emphasizes the details and vibrant color of nature, featuring subjects from around the world. The special reading will feature Brad Vice, author of "The Bear Bryant Funeral Train,” Birmingham-based poet Jim Murphy, and Birmingham-based fiction writer and THE2NDHAND editor Todd Dills.
 

Howard one of Ebony’s 2007 Bachelorettes

Jestina HowardJestina Howard has been named one of Ebony Magazine’s 2007 Bachelorettes. She is one of 19 chosen to make the list that’s been published in the July 2007 issue, available now on newsstands. As mentioned in this week’s Birmingham Times article, she is the only person chosen from Birmingham, Alabama on the list. Ruben Studdard made the bachelors list in the June issue.

Howard is the owner of Aware Cosmetics and is quite active in the city, including serving on the board of Catalyst
