Travelogue: The Brew Lounge checks in with Dave’s Pub

Maintained by two guys in Pennsylvania and focused on creating an open dialogue about beer, The Brew Lounge decided to take a look at Dave’s Pub here in Five Points South while shining a light on the Free The Hops campaign to increase the alcohol levels to allow for more beers to be made available at bars statewide.

The poster goes on to talk about his impressions of one of our busier nightlife hubs and tends to speak quite favorably of it (though most of the focus is on the bar itself. That may be a surprise for those of us that frequent the area.

“Get Downtown” event postponed

With temperatures predicted to reach above 100 for Thursday, extending the heat wave that The Magic City and the surrounding region is suffering from, ONB has chosen to postpone this Thursday’s installment of Get Downtown event. There has been no make up date announced for the August 16 block party, though it is hopeful that it will be announced soon. You can always check the website to stay up to date on any changes or announcements.

UAB IT internship program seeks applicants

UAB’s Information Technology Internship Program has let us know they have 13 positions available for the 2007-2008 academic year. Open to students enrolled at the school, interns in the program work 20 hours per week in a variety of positions throughout the IT organization. Students are paid stipends and receive a tuition scholarship, and their work hours are flexible.

“This is a great way for students to gain work experience in their field of study,” said Jaime Hudson, who coordinates the program for the university’s Office of the Vice President for Information Technology. “Our past interns have told us that they enjoyed learning valuable skills while being challenged by important projects.”

For more information contact Hudson at 975-2853, e-mail itinterns@uab.edu or visit www.uab.edu/it/interns.

Take a Moment: Brew a cup of coffee, support a local organization

We were out starting to place our bright orange fliers around town over the weekend when we stumbled across a yard sale at the Crestwood Coffee Company. The sale was to raise funds for Black Warrior Riverkeeper. It was also a great opportunity to debut a new a new dark roast named in the organization’s honor by Higher Ground Roasters over in Leeds, AL. Proceeds from the sale of the new roast blend will go to support the non-profit organization. You can order it online or pick some up throughout the Birmingham metro region (a list is included in the Locust Fork Journal’s post about the coffee and the yard sale).

What better way to support the cause?
